Jesus that’s a shock alright. Was he generally in ill health? Because that is way too young for an ex athlete to die.

Tragic news. Third player at least from the 1995 RWC Final to pass away. He was outstanding that day and kept tackling Jonah Lomu fearlessly again and again.

Condolences to everyone connected with Natal and South African Rugby.

4 if you count Nelson in the 6 Jersey. Boom, tish.

Small, Mulder and Joost were incredible in defense that day, RIP.

Correct. Seemed like a bit of a prick too in interviews. Also didn't he hit Steve Gordon with some bizarre flying knee cheap shot ? By golly I have Rugby alzheimers, that happened in 94 and I can recall it but I can't barely remember Rugby games these days from a week or two.....

Loads of crap on FB about how our dearly departed winger from the same final never got a try against SA and apparently this was all down to Small. They're right he didn't but fuck me he trampled a fuckload of them and set up others brilliantly in other matches. Some Rugby fans have odd memories.

Plus after that the Paekak Express tore them a new one for years anyway and they never did learn how to tackle Nonu

Yep, I seem to recall Gordon kinda Willieaway-ing off the lineout, and Small coming from a long way back and leaping up with his knee protruding.

No, he is a local rugby writer, very knowledgeable on the technical side of the game and can analyse the game very good, so no, not Oom PB. But Oom PB is doing good btw.

Yeah , memory of him as a player was that he was thought of as an angry grub . Sad that he died so young though

@jegga I was out at Iguacu in Parnell in the mid 90's and saw him in peak angry little man mode after he'd had possibly a few to many beerskis.

I think he would have had to adapt to survive in the age of social media. He was a journeyman winger but will always be a RWC winner and 50 is way too young to go.

Very much. Three out of 15 of a team 24 years on is way too high a percentage.

@MN5 Yeah pretty tragic. One can add Kitch Christie to that mix. Head coach of the Boks from 1994-1995. Died of cancer before the decade was out.

To be fair, very few teams did.
