When Australia played in Galle in 2016, 281 was a winning first innings score

Sri Lanka won all three tests batting first, with scores of 117, 281 and 355. So arguably we're on track (although we don't have Herath to take 28 wickets at 12. Or Starc with 24 at 15).

As long as Ross doesn't try to run himself out on day 2.

don't care if he tries (most games!), only that he fails consistently.

It's a teasing sort of score. If Taylor doesn't get out and the tail bat around him effectively then we could be looking at a scenario where we only bat once in the match.

If he goes early we fold then it could get very uncomfortable. One guy got real nip and turn and took 5 wickets but no one else threatened. Which category will our spinners fall into. Can Boult and Southee get anything out of it.

Was surprised Wagner wasn't picked until I watched some play. Not his sort of wicket at all.

History tells me our spinners will fall into the non threatening non turning category.

Patel got a 5-wkt haul in the only pre-test tour game and they did well against Pakistan in the UAE. If the English spinners can bowl them to victory in Sri Lanka there is no reason ours can't be effective too.

3 quick wickets so far, the first being Taylor. ☹

Rossco from the first ball of the day - tried to cut it hard and nicked it.

Satnav padded up to one that was angled into him from the right armer bowling around the wicket. Done like a dinner.

    And Timmy runs himself out.

At least we didn't lose any wickets when it was raining 🙂

SL take the new ball - bowling spin.

Boult somehow manages to top edge an attempted sweep so that the ball ends up inside his helmet grill! 🙂

And that's all she wrote. All out for 249. Lakmal gets 4

Shame, could be a golden opportunity blown, batting first here.

Very underdone batting unit though with the warm up game washout. So have an excuse.

    Tail is looooong, though.

Southee looked good batting until he went for a wander.

We need a couple of early wickets while the ball is still new.

Yeah - a mediocre effort after the openers got away to a decent enough start.

Sri Lanka going along quite well until Thirmanne's eyes light up at the sight of Ajaz and he dances down, has a hoick misses and stumped!

Patel is continuing to impress. Chucks it up and gets great drift - watch his lbw for that. Somerville looks limited and struggles to bowl 6 good ones. Santner's a fine limited overs bowler.

Broke a dangerous partnership on tea but need to get Matthews, one of world cricket's unsung guns.

At tea we lead by 106 runs, they're 3 down

Monsoon season will probably have the final say

Boult makes it 4 down first over after tea

By God the castle, brick thing in the background makes this venue one of the best around. Outstanding.

Looks to be the cheap seats too.

Initially I thought the people up there were tourists but most seem to be locals as they don't move.

Hate to harp, but this is some fine spin bowling. 5 wickets in 16.1 overs - pretty bloody handy. He's quite good to watch because he always looks likely, got Matthews with a jaffa

@Siam makes for great viewing! He's as dangerous as Santner is innocuous (in tests) 😁

Had them on the ropes for a while, but Lakmal and Dickwella are making this into a one innings shootout.

Thought Kane should have changed it up a bit more when he just persisted with bowling a long spell of Patel and Somerville.
