    Coles as Captain? 🤔

Has he done it before? TBH he's a bit of a cock so not sure he's your man

We had Fitzy as captain, you have Hooper - being a cock doesn't rule out someone from being captain.

Coles, more often than not, has the ability to lift the team. I would be concerned about his durability. Whitelock is an excellent player, is he a bit passive? A new coach that isn't from the group could mean anything is on the table

Jesus. Not many good options when you add in things like being on the field for the full 80, World Cup full cycle, etc

Has to be one of Cane or Whitelock, but will either be in the team in two years.

We have had to carry Read for the past few years thanks to injuries, hate to make that mistake again.

Might need to be a transitional captain while another player is groomed. None of the younger players would appear to be ready. And the new coach would be wise to avoid a Taine Randell situation

looking beyond say Whitelock or Cane, what players that have been on the radar might emerge as captains beyond the current team?

Jacobson? Papali'i? If he can ever stop breaking, Gibson?

Not alot of younger guys coming through in our key positions of loose forward or lock shaping up as poytential leaders?

Perhaps it is time to reconsider whether a captain can be appointed with an iron clad commitment to having them in the XV four years on? The problem is no one fits the age profile to do that. Coles perhaps? The way substitutions are used it could be a mixed bag.

Between the efforts on the weekend and his comments after re-signing with the NZRU Whitelock doesn't particularly inspire me as a skipper. Cane I'm neutral on. I weirdly think Barrett may thrive in the role in a weird way.

It is funny though - Robertson is the rockstar candidate who is going to shake everything up, but is hands down the most likely coach to appoint the obvious pick as captain.

The first place to look is the super captains.

    Blues - Tuipulotu/Gibson
    Chiefs - Cane
    Hurricanes - Coles
    Crusaders - Whitelock
    Highlanders - ???

Whoever it is needs to command their place in the starting XV too. I'd be comfortable to use Whitelock for 2020 and select his likely replacement as a VC. I wouldn't be worried about 2023 just yet.

Yeah, start with Whitelock and try out vice captains. next squad annoucement is going to be the most interesting in years.

We could go down the co-captains pathway and have Cane and Whitelock. We're already halfway there with the leadership group.

i bet it's not (easy to say now, 7 months in advance!!)

Who do you see, who isn't retiring, being realistically left out? Especially by a new coach in a bedding-in process?

@Hooroo Why a forward? there have been successful captains in the backline. Tana was a good and successful captain, Farrell for England would be the obvious current example. I agree full back - wing too far away from the action.

Just my personal preference. Don't mind a halfback captain but certainly no further out.

Has a Captain won the cup with a number greater than 9 on their back? Genuine question as quickly thinking, I can't think of one

    It's been:
    Halfback
    Halfback
    Flanker
    Lock
    Lock
    Hooker
    Flanker
    Flanker

@Cyclops was thinking about who it would have been in 1991, so Farr-Jones?

Yep. Looking at it, I realised that until Richie lead us to victory in 2011, the Jersey number of the winning captain had consistently decreased.
