We could go down the co-captains pathway and have Cane and Whitelock. We're already halfway there with the leadership group.

next squad annoucement is going to be the most interesting in years

i bet it's not (easy to say now, 7 months in advance!!)

Who do you see, who isn't retiring, being realistically left out? Especially by a new coach in a bedding-in process?

@Hooroo Why a forward? there have been successful captains in the backline. Tana was a good and successful captain, Farrell for England would be the obvious current example. I agree full back - wing too far away from the action.

Just my personal preference. Don't mind a halfback captain but certainly no further out.

Has a Captain won the cup with a number greater than 9 on their back? Genuine question as quickly thinking, I can't think of one

    It's been:
    Halfback
    Halfback
    Flanker
    Lock
    Lock
    Hooker
    Flanker
    Flanker

@Cyclops was thinking about who it would have been in 1991, so Farr-Jones?

Yep. Looking at it, I realised that until Richie lead us to victory in 2011, the Jersey number of the winning captain had consistently decreased.

Carling has been the only captain from the losing side that had a jersey number greater than 9.

    Good spot.

Other than halfbacks (Gregan was a losing captain in 2003), the only back to captain a RWC final was Will Carling in 91.

    Snap @Bovidae

I thought Jack Goodhue showed a superb attitude in adversity last weekend and is worth considering.

My vote went for Ardie Savea. World Class player, young enough to be there in 2023, a happy warrior, good bloke. Definitely a potential AB captain

Sam Cane, the other obvious candidate. Sam Whitelock is an excellent captain for the Crusaders, but his form has been mixed for the ABs over the past couple of years.

Please no Whitelock. It's time to start a fresh and with the next breed. Sam's had 3 world cups and just didn't look like he was up there anymore last weekend. Itoje & Lawes both overshadowed him.

I don't know who it should be honestly. I would have said Sam Cane, but I think he's more leadership group than leader.

    So, I don't know. Not a clue.

@MajorRage Might be time to compensate for not having a single outstanding candidate with dual captains? Cane and a back.

Perhaps. I'd go Coles and a back. Goodhue, perhaps.

As other alluded to, Coles has done a fine job for the Canes, but the modern hooker doesn't play 80 minutes.

Would it be possible to have a separate thread/poll to discuss the next captain?

10 of the 11 players continuing on with the most caps are below in order. I excluded Moody as we haven't had a prop captain since Whinereay and it is unlikely to see another soon):

    Whitelock
    Aaron Smith
    B.Barrett
    Rettalick
    Coles
    Cane
    TJP
    Taylor
    Savea
    ALB

You missed DMac. 23 caps ...

we would need a back up plan if we go with Cane, I think his neck injury may have taken a bigger impact than we may know and could possibly see his career finish earlier than maybe expected - hope to be proved wrong
