@Bovidae June 2020 is a late start getting then into first tests in July

I'm sure "I wont leave earlier" wouldn't stick so hard and fast if the job was the ABs as opposed to the Wobblies.

Exactly. The main point is that he hasn't signed with the ARU yet as the media was reporting.

@Machpants he's worked with Wayne Smith before, surely Wayne could work with the team until Rennie arrives, and then just stick around and help.

So who would Rennie bring with him as assistants?

@sparky Why would you pick players that still need coaching in rugby skills? They are All Blacks so you would expect them to have those bases covered before getting selected thus no need to have a Specialist Coach Skills apointee.

    So you recall Muck Byrne?

I don’t have any issues with Wayne Smith, but I’m kinda looking forward to a completely new setup with guys that haven’t been involved in the recent past.

So if we don’t have to I’m hoping three brand newbies that can bring in something fresh and also grow and learn together.

@ACT-Crusader my comment wasnt serious...it is likely to be completely new, so makes you wonder who will work with who...

    Who would Fozzie bring in?
Assume JJ would bring Brown, who else?
    Who would Razor bring?

Will any of the above be talking to one another about working together?

    @taniwharugby

There have been stories in the media that Brown has been approached by both Foster and Robertson, and he already has a relationship with Joseph. He will be in demand.

NZR will want to get this finalised ASAP because there could be flow-on effects for super rugby teams losing personnel close to the start of the 2020 season.

    Recent comments from Rennie:

“Probably the easiest way to clarify this is that I know there’s lots of speculation in the media that I’ve already signed [a contract with Australia] and people have been informed and all this sort of stuff,” he said. "That’s not accurate. I haven’t signed, and I will definitely be here till the end of this season, which is the end of June (2020).

“I’ll just reiterate: regardless of what happens to me beyond this season, I’m here for the full season. It’s important to me. I’m committed to the Warriors and I won’t leave earlier.” Asked whether he would be interested in coaching the Wallabies, Rennie said he would jump at the chance. "Yeah, I think we’ve discussed this before, so yeah, absolutely," he said. "I guess what I’m implying is there’s lots of talk about this and I’m already committed [to Glasgow], you know. There’s a lot of speculation, as there has been for months.”

So there appears to be no reason why he couldn't throw his name into the hat for the ABs.

Fox Sports reporting that the NZRU are circling, take that with a grain of salt though

of course, you can spin that two ways. If you get him, you beat NZ to him and make NZR look bad, or that he reneged on a deal making him look bad and also condemning Raelene further for not getting him..

    win win for them lol

Rennie with Wayne Smith and Tony Brown is a bit of dream team for me. The problem is we don’t have a world class defensive coach available - I doubt that Smith would take it.

And, to the best of my knowledge Robertson is not a defensive specialist; nor Joseph, plus I assume that both would only be keen on a head coaching role.

So, could we go outside to get a D specialist or reinvest in McLeod and try to get a coach for him (e.g., Wayne Smith)?

Our defense was a fucking mess last week so I’m tempted to boot him, despite Stormy being one of my all time favorite players.

Apart from Farrell, who we can’t get anyway, who else would be a defensive specialist we could bring in?

I’d also be tempted to get a better kicking/skills coach again - I feel like our kicking has gone downhill since we lost Mick.

For the scrum, IFIIK. what are the fern’s thoughts?

We leaked some points when Smith was the defence coach too (e.g., 40 pts to Ireland in Chicago) so I wouldn't draw too many conclusions based on only the England game.

I think the most important position will be the forwards coach in the new coaching group. I don't think we progressed under Cron in recent years, and usually when the ABs have lost it's been because we have been dominated up front.

Heard "they have sounded out Eddie Jones" too.

I'm thinking they have advised all the potential candidates they can think of.

That grows into "circling", "sounding out" etc

The Japan RU has offered JJ more than the double of his current earnings to keep his job. I don't think the NZRFU could make such a high financial proposal.

Didn't seem to do much for the Wallaby's kicking skills...

@taniwharugby @antipodean TBF, the kicking coach can't have much impact if the team is instructed not to kick by the coach.

He's a 'Skills coach' now too I think - similar to Cron, he wanted a better position, and similar to Cron wasn't prepared to go and earn it with a Super team first. We let Mick go but promoted Cron..

Correlated with a number of players retiring who were good kickers.

This is what I don't understand. Obviously I'm not in the environment, but it's a reasonable question to ask where you demonstrated a capability to be the coach with a broader portfolio.
