Aussie Bush Fires

@Hooroo I'm a suburuban dweller who was a country boy, so I'm not wedded to the idea of a big city. Not like I'm going out drinking every weekend, either.
But I could handle the idea of living somewhere around TA or Matamata on a few acres - beautiful country. Not sure the wife (Sydney born and bred) would feel the same about not having David Jones a 20 minute drive away
Naturally, you can't judge a place's liveability with a 3-day visit. But my mate's selection outside Tauranga looks like the fucking business. And hanging out with Red Beard at COBRAS during winter season sounds excellent
I agree, if you are buying a block of land, anywhere in the East Waikato is suitable. There are some lovely blocks on the eastern side of the Kaimais looking over water and the mount. We were looking at a farm there but they aren't ideal for in training horses unfortunately due to the type of grass.

Very hazy yesterday. One of those few utterly windless days in the morning and the late gust in the afternoon wasn't enough to clean up the air. Aircon filters at work can't keep it out. Another total fire ban today.
-
@NTA should have listened to you. Doors open3d at 10am and closed at 11am due to "poor air quality". Like they didn't know that an hour earlier. We have a season pass (cheaper than the day pass fornsime reason), but plenty of poor nuggets spent a bomb to get in today for a couple of rides. They had nobody manning any of the food outlets either so seems like they always knew they would be closing early.

@NTA was on another thread a while back. Scary to think that bad as the air quality is for you guys that there are cities that are constantly 7-8 times worse
I'm working on the wife to accept we need to move to NZ.
Tassie is closer, plus you can keep growing your super.

u wouldn't last 5 minutes in Te Aroha!! Tauranga is a lovely place but the infrastructure isn't coping with the influx of those migrating that way.
If I was moving from Sydney, I would want to move to Auckland, Tauranga or at a pinch, Napier.am sure there'd be some spots outside Auckland (north, south or west) but near enough for city slickers to get a happy medium? Although I dont expect cost changes greatly unless you go really far away.
Whangarei is in a similar predicament to Tauranga, but probably where it was 5-10 years ago re infrastructure due to population growth.

It is also Tassie. So no...

@chimoaus probably not the place, but fuck insurance. North Queensland is basically not in most companies risk appetite now. It's getting really expensive to insure a house, if you can get coverage. And it took 3 months to find coverage for our business assets after our previous insurer dropped us.
The insurance industry can lick my balls
off topic as hell, but to follow this point
The Woolshed is a nightclub that is an institution here in Cairns. A backpacker haven known the world over for a great place to have a fucking good night 7 days a week.
Dancing on tables and barrels, and even sometimes the bar, is just part of the institution.
Well, that is now banned, thanks to the wowzers at their insurance company. For the last few years they have been having to get builders in 6-monthly to certify everything was sturdy and structurally sound, that is no longer enough for the insurers, who have forced them to ban it if they want to maintain cover.
fuuuuuck the insurance industry.

@Kirwan Its fucken ridiculous is what it is, just lucky we have aircon in the house but I always feel for the wildlife. I have 4 water spots on the property I keep topped up for the Wallabies and Kangaroos etc. The fire danger is also high, it is so fucken dry the ground is like tinder and there is no decent rain forecast anytime soon.
My wife mentioned moving back to NZ last night, no idea if she was serious or not but if the temperatures keep climbing and climate related issues increase we may have to reassess living in the bush.
-
I've seen higher temperatures in Penrith than in Arkaroola and Finke at the same time of year. Amazing what a heat sink can do with modern infrastructure.
-
@Hooroo yeah when we went to Olympis is was high 40's but as you say, dry heat...
I dont mind the heat, but its bad enough when it gets over 30 here.
Was talking to my mate last night who is on holiday from Rockhampton said he isnt looking forward to heading back next week.
