Harry has a history of rebelling against being a royal. I reckon that was part of the attraction to Meghan.
I certainly don't buy that this is a 100% Meghan driven move, which a lot of outlets are stating either.
Meghan is copping it but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Harry is the one that made this happen. She's endured loads of racism and other abuse, and given they have a kid now, I wouldn't be surprised if he said fuck being a royal anymore let's move out of the UK.
She's received plenty of criticism for her actions, which is part of the job. A lot of people claiming this is racism. But social media aside (and that's global) I don't think I've seen her exposed to it at all.
I also don't buy the line that they didn't consult the Queen or royal family. Their statement says they'd been in talks for months. If those talks don't go anywhere then its hardly surprising that they just cut their losses and made the decision to go. The only part that would have been a surprise to the Queen is that they actually went ahead and did it.
I completely buy it. They said internal talks, which quite clearly was between the two of them. Can't see why the palace would lie.
She's been exposed to plenty of racism, whether it's on social media or it's the Katie Hopkins "she doesn't look like a royal the way Kate does" type comments and articles. It's also true that the majority of criticism she's copped has had nothing to do with racism. Both things can be true.
I totally agree with you about the crowd that cries racism at everything and how ridiculous they are, but just because they're wrong with their "The UK is racist" comments doesn't mean there aren't a significant number of racists in the UK (as there are in EVERY country). I feel like we're getting to the point now where people are so fed up with the 'RACISM IS EVERYWHERE' crowd that they won't even acknowledge it is still an issue lest they give an inch to the far left.
I also really don't think internal talks would just be Harry and Meghan talking about it with each other for months. I'd say what blindsided the Royal family is releasing a statement without their consent. That's what they'd be pissed about, I very much doubt the idea of them stepping back has just come out of nowhere.

@MajorRage I'll just add, after re-reading your comments, that I agree that the reason they're leaving is nothing to do with racism or the UK being a uniquely racist place like some of those left wing nutters are claiming.

RACIST! has now become the joke insult for kids in the UK. You don't like my haircut? RACIST! You won't lend me some money? RACIST! It's actually really funny.

@Catogrande Gen Z will save us all. Mocking idiocy into submission.

I've seen it happen to my ginger Arab (untold amounts of anger) best mate. Found a good woman and lost the fire.
That's what happens to a Ranga that finally finds someone who'll shag them.
Testosterone - gone.I'm pleased that he's happy though, angry Arabs can be scary.

@No-Quarter although I don’t disagree overall the not looking like a royal like Kate has nothing to do with race in my view.
I totally agree with it. She doesn’t. Kate destroys her I’m pretty much so every way.

It has been an open secret for many years that Harry doesn't enjoy being a Royal much. He hates the press intrusion and finds the ceremonial side boring. He used to get on with his older brother well, but they have fallen out since Meghan came on the scene. She seems to make him happy so good luck to them. They have probably planned this move for a while.
Not sure his open defiance of the Queen is wise though. She is one of the most skilled politicians of the last century or so.
-
There isn't enough money in the world that would allow me to deal with the British Tabloid press, and that goes double for being a royal.
If i had a cool 30 million in the bank, and a smoking hot wife, I'd piss off somewhere as well.

That's pretty low level racism. She's one of the most privileged people on earth.
If they maintain a deliberate public persona, claims that they're sick of the intrusion in their lives should be met with tired scepticism. Creating a website five minutes after telling grandma you're out of the family business doesn't lend a lot of credibility to that line of thinking.
-
Brendan O’Neill:
A woke Wallis Simpson
Why is Meghan ditching her duchess role? Because she wants to be the global Queen of Woke.
“ To someone like Meghan, who sprang from celebville, who sees herself as the embodiment of right-on goodness, and who loves nothing more than advertising her eco-virtue and performing her PC credentials, life in the British monarchy was never going to be a good fit.”
-
@Salacious-Crumb that's a good point, her and Harry have been getting more political of late so breaking free of the Royals allows them to do more of that.

It's low level but it would grate. Agree on the website though, I hadn't seen that. Sounding more and more like she wants to go back to being a celebrity, with Harry thinking it's a great chance to get out of his Royal duties.

I have no doubt there were sectors of the British media who wanted some WASP blonde Barbie to be Harry's wife (look at his exes) and judged Meghan accordingly. However it's hard to cry racism when so many of the stories were about Meghan being a pissy asshole to staff. Plus all that weird shit with her family.

Well ... Piers didn't miss:

We've seen this process all before
Be an awful person or beahve appallingly
press draw attention to it
social media amplifies the outrage
refuse to won your bullshit behaviour and learn from it
claim you are a victim of [delete as applicable] the right/alt right/ racists / misogynists/ transphobes/islamophobes
people avoid criticising you to stop being lumped in with whatever phobe you've attached to criticism of you
Bask in your victim statusSo I'm guessing the palace won't be interested in paying off the tabloids to stop them looking into her alleged past as a yacht girl anymore?

Piers is over the top, really putting the boot in. It’s kinda mean. But I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me smile. And it’s hard to disagree with.

Yep. Throw in what happened to his Mum I can understand wanting to back out of things a bit.

I reckon Harry is a good guy who has found a partner with similar goals around philanthropy and making a difference. The departure from the old firm isnt a surprise given his loathing of the press etc. He's done formal stuff for years so I can understand if he's had enough.
Not enough detail about the funding etc to judge if they are taking the piss.I reckon the queen will see this as him turning away from his service/duty. When that's been an absolute bedrock of her rule, even if things are changing quickly around the monarchy. I can totally emphasize with her being gutted by that.
Oh and if it was legit dropped out of the blue that is def a dick move.
