@voodoo And how do you put an economic value on life?
Actually “value of life” is a well established economic concept. I’ll cut through the crap and tell you it’s generally about USD 7m. Of course, just like everybody else, mine is much more.
Believing your own initials, eh?!

And as a bizarre coincidence, today I had a crumpet topped with smoked mackerel and grilled cheddar with a little piccalilli. Absolutely feckin gorgeous. The glass or two of carignan with it was tops too.
Sooo...grilled cheddar...you grill cheese separately to put it on the crumpet?
You would have to ask the chef and I'm sure he'll tell you it's a family secret.
-
@Catogrande I reckon the whole thing was grilled.

Crumpets are sweet in my family. Save your cheese for English muffins

Reading some of the proposed restrictions the Australian government is reportedly going to announce, I have a new understanding of what it would be like to live in North Korea.

@voodoo Thanks. Pretty good clip. If a country is going to go down that route it has to have be certain it has sufficient ICU beds and trained nurses per head. AND that elderly CAN be isolated. I suspect views on the latter are the REAL reason the UK tightened abruptly.
In theory, herd isolation would work for Germans. And in about a month, it seems the UK will have enough capacity to do so.
Last 20% of clip degenerated into EU dogma. The virus is exposing the massive gap between collectivist EU propaganda and bugger thy neighbor reality. Euro a massive short.

Probably one of the better graphics I have seen.

Fuck what a week
In 7 days we've gone from "trim all fat, run lean, maybe make a few changes"
To
Let go or stand down basically our entire workforce, mothball equipment, shut the doors, and try to still be here when people start moving again.

Dunno if I've me'ed myself and this has been posted.
(This thread is like the virus itself. Moving too fast to keep up with. )
But I found the link below fascinating. It's long and I skimmed over some of it. But it's about the numbers, and what can be gleaned therefrom. The ones that we can rely on anyway.
Somewhere in the middle of this link there's another link to a piece on the Spanish flu, and why that hit kids hard, as opposed to COVID-19 (short for "corona virus disease" ... that may or may not have been obvious but I didn't realise that) that seems to "target" oldies.
Anyway, Spanish Flu (which originated in New York ... ) may have spared the oldies due to the Russian Flu from 20 odd years earlier as they had survived and developed immunity/resistance. Different type of virus too (influenza virus v corona virus).
They go on a bit about what data they do and don't use ... I skipped over that.
Found as I went looking for comorbidity rates for underlying health conditions. Info on this was towards the end, and was not comforting ...
But I'd still like to see the numbers of comorbidity by age, as those conditions are directly correlated with age. Correlation vs. causation etc. And also if you have one of those conditions it's possible (likely?) to have more than one.

An elderly neighbour from down the road has just knocked on my door with a leaflet with her number on as shes organising a whatsapp group for our road... The woman has to be about 75.
Two things,- Isn't she meant to be inside?
2.Feel like a failure for not being the one setting up a group and a 75yo has taken it upon herself.
This worries me

That's the most telling post in the whole thread.
In 2 weeks time Australia, where I am, is going to be divided into; those who are coping (same income or savings) and those who feel ( are) fucked.
Who's profession will be gutted is up to luck.
The looks on faces of the two airport rental car managers I spoke to this week were nothing short of extremely distressed. That's after 5 days of 14 day isolation, not border closing.
-
@Bones these guys need 45 bookings a week and many of them long term. That's been guaranteed income. Population 25k
More importantly, as you know, we've been prospering in a system that demands full bore full revs at all times for us all to win. So many moving parts going flat out.
We've revelled in a system that favours spending tomorrow's money, today.

Yeah its worrying the speed of this...even as a nerd who thought it would be a good idea to spreadsheet the spread. What happens in another 7 days?
Our supermarket is nearly a week without pasta and TP now (though other items are coming in in small numbers). The virus isn't widespread yet but at the current growth rate we'll be well into the thousands of cases in a week or two..not to mention the job loses. That's a whole lot of stress buildup for folk that have never really had a struggle like this.
There's a joke going around among pro-2nd amendment folk in the states. "It sure is nice to have all these anti-gun folk collecting supplies for us"
Australia is a week or 2 behind the infections but we seem to be a week ahead on the panic curve

I lived in Sydney 30 years ago. When Amcor owned Kimberley Clark Oz, they made TP by the mile?
