@mariner4life ah, that makes much more sense then.
Shit times.
the fucking worst.
for most, that only became apparent yesterday.
to have a million people lose their jobs (govt figures now) with the double whammy of the health fear, it's almost unbearable for some. And for it all to happen so quickly as well.
We are all under the pump mate, just over 24 hours from now NZ is locked down. We are facing at least 4 weeks of life like this, probably much longer.
Your turn will come it’s only a matter of time, it’s some scary shit, personally I’ve never felt so helpless and unsure what to do next. There’s nothing I can do except go home after work tomorrow and stay there.... family and all.. -

And we are trying to put in place plans with out having even teh foggiest notion of how long we are talking.
Has anyone thought about the realities for civilisation as we know it for being locked down for more than 4 weeks? People are going to go fucking nuts.

It's going to be ugly. But you just hope to ride it out

@mariner4life We offer an essential service to Hospitals. One of our smaller branches the staff have refused to work. For too long this afternoon it looked like I was going to have to drive for 6 hours then spend four weeks working my arse off at a boring job - meanwhile running everything remotely and sleeping in the office. and hoping not to get sick.
That's still a real possibility if anyone else falls over.
Lock down doesn't sound too bad.

@Virgil also i hope i am not coming across too "woe is me" because i'm in a decent spot. I just know too many people who no longer are.
Nah mate we are all entitled to feel sorry for ourselves and be a bit titchy. No one knows what to feel or what will happen next. It’s all new only thing we can say is we are all in this together.
My new norm... walk in the door after a draining day at work, wife runs over tells me my clothes are contaminated and starts spraying shit all over. Growls at me for rummaging around picking new clothes to wear then tells me off for standing there not getting dressed fast enough.. like what the fuck..

As if there wasn't enough to get told off about as it is

the realities dawned on Mrs Mariner for the first time yesterday. I talked to her every day last week, but she obviously just dismissed it.

It's not that silly though. My wife is changing clothes before coming home for that same reason.

Mrs Rembrandt too..except she's had to deal with 6 weeks of my jabbering to finally take it seriously...now the hand sanitisers at the door aren't the work of a crazy germophobe.
Looks like her work has been designated an essential service, good for finances but it does mean we are likely to be getting a visit from Mr Corona at some point by the number of people she will come in close contact with (radiography). Will be good to get on the other side of that.

Totally makes sense, it’s just slammed into me now and I wasn’t in the mood when I literally crawled in the door..

I work in tech for a large financial institution so I'm in the weird position where my hours have significantly increased over the past two weeks (have done some 70+ hour weeks) as we attempt to build out our remote access capabilities among a host of other things in response to this.
The long hours have sucked (I'm getting pretty burnt out TBH), and being expected to go into the office at times during a pandemic is less than ideal, but I am truly one of the lucky ones at the moment because I don't have immediate job/financial uncertainty like so many others. And that's just through sheer luck that I happen to work in the right industry at the right time.
I get why the lockdown is needed to protect the health system as we head into winter, but I can't see how we can go much longer than four weeks without destroying people's lives.

she's been all over the health, but the state of the local economy after this finishes wasn't occuring to her. it is now
and her accounting firm are now very worried. as of yesterday

My 3 month contract finished at the end of February (after 2.5 years). I was planning taking March off, then trying to find more work.
New plan, applied for a job stacking shelves at a local supermarket, more to have something to do and feel useful rather than sitting on my arse catching up with tv series for the next 6 weeks

Incidentally for any Aussie based ferners who are out of work and looking for something to tie them over at least in the short term maybe jump on this if its in your area
@raznomore (from memory I think you were one of these? Apologies if I've got that wrong)

After we all get through this, knocking on wood I wonder what forever changes will remain?
I imagine that international travel will never be the same. (Proof of health, tracing and all that) I also how millennials (and others for that matter) will effect change in the way they think, it's not war time but it is a restriction of freedoms most have never seen before.
