How much of the rule breaking do you guys think is down to Cummings? Maybe, I give the UK population too much credit, but did anybody really change their mind about what they would do because of it? I.e was anybody planning to spend Saturday in the garden and instead decided to hit up the beach because "if Cummings can, I can"?
I think those that broke, were going to break it anyway and just answered Cummings as some sort of reason to justify it.

Apparently Brighton was heaving on the weekend also.
I have a friend in the Sussex Police and he reckons they are having to try and move people on from the beach and the sea front in Brighton. They're getting a lot of stick for it too. Alla bit unpleasant by all accounts

Cummings is a convenient peg to hang your hat on I feel and a peg that should not be there. Poorly handled and left things wide open. But I agree it appears to be mostly used as as an excuse by those who were looking for one. Not giving such people that excuse may have made things somewhat better but in truth we won't know.

Mrs M's son and daughter live in Burgess Hill. They have seen a growing increase in people in parks, etc for 2-3 weeks. Brighton beach was heaving 2 weeks ago when they drove past.

A simpler answer is that people are seeing the lockdown as over, notwithstanding BoJo labouring that it is conditional. It's hard to get British people to understand a nuanced message.

@Victor-Meldrew on a similar note - the increase in traffic around here over the past couple or so weeks has been huge. Not long after lockdown we had to go on the M25 and got a photo of a huge stretch with no other vehicles - can't see that happening again. Had to go on it again a couple of weeks ago and it was back to normal.

The A38 between Bodmin & St Austell was almost dead 3 weeks ago. Seen a big and growing increase when collecting the weekly shopping from early May. Think it's mainly people getting back to work.
Tourist places far less of an increase. Have to wait and see what happens this WE.

And we wonder why we were kept in Lockdown longer.

So, back on topic. The Cummings story still has legs it seems. Not sure that this is now anything more than a witch hunt (even if true) but it does highlight that if there's a bad news story you simply have to nip it in the bud. Conclusively.

Of course we can trust the common sense of the great British public
There were less people on the Chilkoot Pass
The reason for the evacuation

It's reported he is now self-isolating pending the results of a Coronavirus test. Why he doesn't just fuck off to Durham is anyone's guess.
