Watched a documentary on Ella Fitzgerald a couple of nights ago and started to listen to some of her stuff.
Holy crap. What a voice and what a singer.
I watched that too.
Ella had an incredible range and was naturally pitch perfect.
I grew up listening to her records as my parents were big fans, even went to a show Of hers in the 60s in Detroit and still have the tickets. That was quite a trip in those days!
It would have been but they used to live there.
Dad was seconded to GM on a sabbatical to learn the latest stuff (he was a design engineer) and bring back to his work in NZ. They actually got married over there and used to live in Flint. Their old house in now a run down slum.
They had a lot of black friends and shared a love of jazz/swing, going to shows like Ellington, Basie, Jonah Jones and Armstrong
It probably was what drew me to listening to soul music as I always had a soft spot for horns. When , as a teen, I listened to Dexys “Searching for the young soul rebels” it had me tracing back the Northern Soul inspiration and went from there. That first Denys album was awesome , when my light turns green was a personal favourite, i hadn’t listened to it for years , and played it recently while driving .
Didn’t care too much for the come on Eileen stuff that followed though personally

Jennifer Paige was hot. I wonder what she’s up to these days?

Kevin Rowland is definitely an odd one. The first album was all about Northern Soul then he just changed up both music and image to Celtic Folk and half the band left (and formed The Bureau). Too Rye Aye did have a couple of songs that would have fitted with SFTYSR though.

@MN5 still looking good!!
God Damn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kicking off your posting with a GnR song is not bad
Hot take, it's actually one of the weakest on the album

Makes you feel old knowing that album is over 30 years old..

What would be your best?
Rocket Queen would be up there, with sweet child it’s the kick ass guitar solo and opening riff that makes that songMan my older teenage years were defind by GNR and weirdly I couldn’t stand them when I first heard them.
Felt like it took forever for the Use your Illusion albums to come out

Rocket Queen* is awesome, so is Sweet Child O Mine, My Michelle and The Nightrain are probably my least favourite ... The Nightrain especially sounds like it could have been from any other band.
I haven't listened to the Use Your Illusions since the 90s.
*TBH, the stuff teenage boys always go on about with Rocket Queen, the moans at end, I actually think are the shittiest part of the song, and stop it from being perfect.
-
Out ta Get Me is my fav
then Nightrain
Then Mr Brownstone -
I could play Rocket Queen, Paradise City, Nighttrain all day, occasionally interspersed with My Michelle, Jungle and Mr Brownstone.
There's no really weak tracks on what is the best debut album, ever.

Paradise City, shit why did u forget that one?
Mr Brownstone is awesome.. it’s just one of best rock albums ever.
Plenty of great songs in Illusion 1 and 2 but also too many fillers, way too ambitious with them I think
Paradise City is one of my favourite driving (alone) songs. Along with Money for Nothing (Full Version) and Free Bird.
I can ruin my hearing when those songs come on
