Local MPs will probably still get their seats, but it's hard to see people giving their party vote to National. ACT could benefit. Or NZF. Which means that bloody phoenix will rise again.
I think you win find that kiwis like to keep whoever is in power in check. There will be a fair few in the 'swing' that vote on that basis.

"... crush ..."
... how many times is that going to appear in headlines about JudyC? -
All very well to have a plan and a budget, but National have had that in the past and done a piss poor job. Tens, perhaps hundreds of millions unspent. The Transport Agency is the problem (and Bridges who was a truly shite minister) so if they could stop the heel dragging 65 step process to get even the smallest roading projects underway, and stop farking about with actual viable options like light rail, could be good.

@Mokey National really are clueless. RONS v 3.2.
Does fuck all for the country economically. Most of the projects they promote are unnecessary e.g Auckland Harbour Bridge actually carries less traffic now than 30 years ago. None of them give a positive ROI even based on their own sums Doesn't help with global warming and the clincher for me - building roads ultimately makes congestion worse
Way to look totally bereft of ideas. So what else will they come up. Let's trawl their manifesto from1993 for inspiration

My worry with both parties looking to throw money at infrastructure is that the effect on local employment is only a small portion of the spend.
Id like to see a bit more lateral thinking here. I know that state owned business is a thing of the past but investment in new industries that actually produce stuff and employ people with employee buy in schemes for eventual return to private would seem a better investment than another road. -
@Snowy I think she'd be good company, politics and her political persona aside. She definitly errs on the side of steel and snarky but she's funny and plays on the crusher stuff in a self aware manner imo.
I like that she doesn't suffer fools - even if she gets a bit mean. Will she make the same error as Simon and play the person rather than the ball? With the big changes in national they are a bit more open to criticism about their own coherence etc.
Bet the first reporter to revist her back catalogue of boo boos (real or no) gets skewered!

I've seen Judith speak. She is surprisingly more personable than you would expect. Actually quite humourous, will be interesting to see how she comes across in the press. Wasn't great in the past.
In recent times her humor and wit is quite apparent. She has left the peak crusher image behind. There are lots of people who are too young to know how she even got the nickname, assuming she did so for crushing those not racer cars....

@Snowy said in NZ Politics:
@canefan That was how she got the name wasn't it? The boy racer car thing?
She is actually quite astute and likeable . Time will tell how the public and press portray her.
The press have been quite favorable so far, but its early. I think she is far more polished than Simon or Todd, and she represents a different viewpoint from Jacinda. I think elections are won on ideas but more importantly by setting a particular tone that resonates with voters. Don't just give people stuff, give them the best opportunity to earn it, be aspirational, talk needs to be backed up by the ability to act and actually get things done. These are things that have worked for National in the past and I think there are lots of people that feel that way

Given the current rumours doing the rounds (that I assume we aren’t talking about) there was a possibly telling comment from Winnie in his TV interview this morning declaring that he has never allowed anyone in his party to attack another politician on the basis of health or their partner or marriage.
It came out of the blue but came across as a planned commeo -

If true it’s not something that stays quiet for long in a small country like ours. I’m surprised if true because I would think it would be front footed in an election year

Any general idea about what these rumors are?
From a purely personal perspective, National lost my vote this morning.
According to the paper, they’ll charge me an extra $9000 for my family to go home if, for example, my Father’s cancer takes a turn for the worse and we need to go home.
Edit: apparently Labor will bring in the same thing, so there goes a trip home for, well, I don’t know how long. There is no way my wife and I can afford an extra 10k to let my kid see his grandparents. I guess that’s life.
By the way, if I could choose my isolation place and pay for it myself and build it into the break (eg, an Air BnB) , I’d happily pay the cost and would make sure we isolated correctly.
