In a rugby sense, yep. In a financial sense it's critical to actually having meaningful professional rugby - internationals are where the money is at.

That's fine as long as the guys that refuse to go don't get paid.

Like @Machpants I've worked all days of the year, long periods away from home (and yes been shot at).

I call it a "job" (not the being shot at bit).

@Snowy esp think that if they don't go they take a big financial hit. That's not playing in 75% of ABs tests, they certainly shouldn't get their full hundreds of thousands

I'm pretty sure there will be a pay hit

Years ago it was mentioned the contracts were structured with a base rate plus additional money for assembling for certain blocks of Tests
    eg June Tests/RC/EOYT

@Duluth Has to be. If you don't go to work / play then you don't get paid.
Denial of labour / strike is too harsh but effectively what they are doing.

Really shouldn't be caps for second teamers either, although we do that fairly regularly.

As for the time away - Imagine being abroad for 6 months in 1924 like my great uncle (and namesake on here). No pay.

@Hooroo You might be right but I still think an extra 5 weeks is something that is not too much to ask for considering how much of additional time they have been able to spend with their families already due to the lockdowns.

The irony is in 20 years time a lot of these guys would welcome the time away from home

Well I am all for canning the RC this year so am happy to support the players wishes. It's become a international bore where the NPC seems to have some spark in it finally.

I'm not. I want to see how we go after the trainwreck that was last year. Also, if Foster is going to be the failure that many are predicting, it's best for him to be exposed now so that he can be booted out a couple of years out from the RWC. If the games are called off this year, and he has a bad year next year, it probably won't be enough to get him sacked.

I'm keen to see us play, but only if we are at full strength and only if our opposition are too. To that end, 2 Bledisloe fixtures and 3 RC fixtures seems like the best schedule to me - keep the RC short and sharp and make each and every match count.

One News reporting they have spoken to NZR and they are still working through with players, TV1 also said they spoke to one of the 3 mentioned in the article who said it was not the case

Newshub news just had a story that RA have now formally requested the Bledisloe tests are played in Aust rather than NZ. Who knows if that is actually true. But they can fuck right off if that’s the case.

I don't mind them staying with their families , but they need to take a MASSIVE pay cut for not playing the games we need them in. Otherwise, what is the fucking point.

The 5 Warriors players who returned home did take a substantial pay cut. RTS has been in Aust without his family for the whole time, the only Warriors' player in this situation. As he said, he is the breadwinner in the family and needs to provide for them.

I laughed at that story too. We've got the Bledisloe Cup so no need to bend over to help RA.

Well aslong as we can have all of them at home next year (full crowds, no revenue sharing) 😉 Even if (big HUMUNGOUS if) Ozzie somehow beat us in Oz 3 times out of 4, they'd lose it straight away next year!

Loss of key players but they are full strength.

Imagine how you'd feel if you opted out, and then NZ lost the Bledisloe. The pain would be super brutal.

I'm going to sound old school here, but I think the player should be going, and it needs to be something really significant to not go. Having a young family isn't enough. These boys are paid at the level of CEO, there are obligations that come with that money. This isn't a moral question to me, it's a tradeoff. BB is the only one who may get a pass - having an incoming baby is a different beast; that's a real risk to health. But the rest - need a damn good reason to not get out and do your job.

Counter to this though is these are exceptional times and especially the enforced quarantine on your return. If my employer was sending me away during Covid for 10 weeks, I'd want to know that I could get back for certain events. Imagine if a young kid of one of the players has an accident (heaven forbid) and the player couldn't get back - or was forced to quarantine on return and missed something important. Or was allowed out early even, imagine the negative publicity.

I'm not sure I'd be forcing anyone to go right now, whether directly or indirectly (eg the massive paycuts)

These are extraordinary times. I dont think we can equate this ask with being a busy CEO in normal times.

I say fuck the RC. Get SA to come and do a big tour with plenty of midweek games to get them up to speed. Would be good prep for their Lions tour next year.

Lock the Bledisloe in the cupboard for another year as a middle finger to RA for trying to poach those tests.

So a bit more on this it appears the following options are what they are pushing for, just dont want to play October 10 as it is day after SR Australia final

"RA wants NZ Rugby to hold the Bledisloe tests in New Zealand on October 17 and October 24, leading into a condensed Rugby Championship.

Alternatively, it has proposed hosting all Bledisloe tests in Australia this, proposing a 50-50 revenue split.."

    Stuff shit

I know. Further context though - the players are the revenue stream for the company. And in terms of unusual times, it's a business facing a massive revenue drop with no reserves. So without exaggerating, those international tests are make or break for NZ Rugby.

Look, it's horrible. But ultimately it's just over 2 months away from home. You can't demand it, but I think you can expect your very well paid stars to work with the business when it really really needs you.

I'm torn, but on balance would expect folk to go

They'll want to do that as much as our guys want to be in Aus and cut off from family for 3 months
