Drug convictions have a much bigger impact now than they did in the 1970s when the current law was passed, not least because criminal records weren't really computerised or readily available on demand like they are now. They also weren't typically anywhere near as commonly used for employment screening or immigration checks.
I have other reasons too, but I think the cumulative harm to society is larger from prohibition than legalisation, particularly as the societal harm from usage increases is likely to be minimal compared to the decrease in harm from a 100% decrease in criminal convictions.

@nzzp I've never seen one about them, sure it wasn't the Northland Age?
We have our share of nutters but thats not something I've come across.
Admittedly I don't read them every day, but enjoy them regularly for the amusement they provide and usually when a topic is started such as chem trails they do go back and forth for a bit.

@Bones it was a letter to the editor, they are always agenda fuelled.
the Advocate seemed to have a thing for chemtrail letters for ages. Was pretty weird.

Yeah, I know the woman responsible. Whackjob.
Edit: An example from one of her videos "Join me on my adventures into nature as I transmit messages of support from the Earth's guardians, the Fae, and all other mystical creatures". Maybe for the woo thread though.

@taniwharugby Yep. Many years ago I used to knock round with her sister, who was a really good sort. The one though was clever but a bit of a space cadet even then. Doesn't look like there's ever been a conspiracy or fringe belief too extreme for her to embrace.

Seriously?
My guess is this person wants to know which way they should vote
DISCLAIMER: I didnt read the article, just the headline

I was in the Police for many years. I remember one bloke, heavy meth user, broke into 30+ houses, in and out of Jail. He got out and disappeared off our radar, I thought he must have moved or died.
About 6 months later I run into him at the Supermarket. He has work boots, pants etc on and looked completely different. He spotted me and I made small talk with him. I Said "haven't seen you around" He said, "I'm too bloody tired after work to break into houses."
So after hours upon hours chasing him, going to court, years in jail. All he needed was a job.
I honestly believe the key to reducing offending is education, employment, strong family and social connections.
All the dependent drug users I engaged with couldn't have cared less about its legality. That made no difference whatsoever.
I am all for legalisation, if you want to reduce the harms of drugs you need to give people a reason not to become dependent on them in the first place. Plenty of people use alcohol responsibly and cannabis would be no different.

Given that they have been smoking he literally will be blowing smoke up her ass (which hasn't been used for several centuries as a medical procedure, or in this case it seems entertainment).

Seems highly (ahem) likely it's not going to get over the line. A real opportunity missed but I wonder if folks just have far too much going on for this to really get the level of debate and discussion. Covid, general election, end of life, Covid, ... did I mention Covid?
