@rancid-schnitzel the zero tolerance/throw the book at em take, combined with the spoiled brat comment, comes across as pretty punitive to me. Yep, running on-field isn't on anymore and you should expect to cop fines or whatever the punishment is these days. But in the main that's about player safety and also not having dickheads disrupt a game while it's still going. IMO there is scope for some flexibility in what happened to the kid given it was during the victory lap after the game.
I don't necessarily see a kid from a well off (or super well off) family being any more or less resistant to a rush of blood to the head at a massive sporting event where their idols are literally a few metres away. Doesn't mean he isn't an entitled brat but I'm ok with cutting him some slack.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think him being an entitled brat born with a silver enema up his arse had a massive bearing on it. You see any other kids doing it? Would you be happy if your kids did it? He wasn’t mentally disabled. He knew full well what he was doing was wrong but didn’t give a shit about the consequences. No sympathy here.
A line from a Few Good Men comes to mind.
Seriously, are you related to this kid or something? -

I used to follow SBW on Instagram when I was using that platform and I noticed that this kid was commenting on SBW's page. I clicked on his profile and saw that he's still in touch with SBW, and even visited the ABs in Japan during the 2019 RWC. Great reward for being an entitled little douche who had no regard for the rules
-
as someone who never, ever broke the rules, did I mention ever, I find it ludicrous to think a kid can get away with such illegal activity in this day and age.
Whatever you think of SBW, vast majority of the time, he is/was a marketers dream, he defused that situation and turned it to his, NZR and rugbys advantage.

Especially when you consider that in the era he played there were 5/6 midfielders as good or better than him

@mn5 I call BS, name them? Bearing on mind he covered 12/13 and also was capped on the wing...
Nonu, Smith ( absolute no brainers both always selected ahead of him ) but also Goodhue, ALB and Crotty got picked instead of him at various times. So yeah, can’t think of six but definitely five.....

You said yourself if he was a racehorse he’d be shot after the Lions test.

Random internet poster who claims not to watch rugby claims to be able to rate All Black midfield players from the last 15 years.
Frankly IMO SWB was the piece we were missing at 12 in the 19 RWC.
Also, whoever called the kid and entitled douche was pretty much spot on.

Deserves admonishment for breaking rules

He’s a kid who got excited seeing one of his heroes up close!! The horror of an excited kid breaking the rules.
Honestly, some of the comments on here are disgusting. So many personal shots at a kid based on huge assumptions made because of the way he speaks. And in a lot of cases, from the same people that will argue til blue in the face that a criticism of a non white person doesn't automatically mean racism.
It's exactly the same argument. Give the kid a break. If you have criticism of the situation, blame his guardians at the match, security, or SBW. But not the kid.

You what? Who says it's automatically racist?
I'm confused. Are we or are we not allowed to comment on a 14 year olds behaviour in a regulated social setting?
14 years old and we have to refer to his behaviour as though he's 4 years old or mentally incapable of controlling his behaviour in a social setting?
Bizarre

Re-read and think. You have not grasped my point at all. I'm drawing parallels.

I'm reluctant to enter this argument, but I have no idea what you're arguing here, the parallel is beyond me. How does it compare to the racism point?
On this subject specifically, I reckon the kid should definitely have received a punishment, certainly shouldn't be painted as some awesome story. That's not to say he should get a 5yr ban, just that we should make a clear point that his actions aren't to be tolerated. Cant be encouraging more of this, which is exactly the message I reckon most 12yr olds take away from this (and yeah, I know this guy was 14.)
-
ok, let me explain a bit deeper. In hindsight, the parallel isn't overly clear.
Firstly, @siam is right, I have no right to say what is allowed and isn't, and that shouldn't be picked up as to what I'm saying - but I appreciate it could be read like that.
I'm looking at the comments on the boy and I think a lot of them are horrifically unfair. I listen to that video he's posted, and I heard a pretty nice message from a well spoken, appreciative young man. But yet, here's a couple of (direct & indirect) things used to describe him. Brat, Hampstead fluffybunny, little twat, douche. That's bloody rough, especially after the way he comes across in the video. It's literally none of these things. I would say, polite, seriously appreciative and thankful.
But then I also see words like silver spoon, entitled etc. And it makes sense. I don't believe he's getting abuse because of what he did 5 years ago as a (clearly immature physically at least) 14 year old boy. I think he's getting it more because he's a well spoken British young adult.
The parallel is when people call racism because a non-white is abused with people calling him all of the above because the way he speaks.
Even re-reading this, I'm not sure that still makes any sense. But I stand by my claim that boy doesn't deserve the abuse he's getting.
