@sparky wide service to the community outside the game.

should have been knighted for his punch on the Wales forward at the 87 RWC. One of the genuinely hard men of rugby, and surprisingly small in modern terms.

    Edit: just quality

    Congratulations

    Fantastic rugby player

But in this instance cheap King Hit

    Nothing to admire there

I was at that game. Couldn’t see much because it was over the other side of the field and I was only 8. But I remember an older kid yelling out: “It’s a fight. And we won it!”

From either side, and I don't mind a punch up.

Fighting aside, that was as clean a punch as you'll see. Diferent era.

Also, Huw Richards being brought around and then sent off is very memorable and super unusual.

Jesus, how many red cards would that be in the modern game. 4? 5?

    such a different sport pre-professionalism

He definitely took the opportunity and made it count that’s for sure

@mikethesnow it's not a cheap hit of the guy you punch is wailing into your mate!

This. Don’t throw punches if you don’t want to receive them yourself.

    Firstly, well done Buck.

Alan's technique was piss-poor in protecting his brother.

I won a school sweepstake for this game. I had 50-6 as the final score. 🙂

Kerry Fitzgerald died far too young at 43.

Btw, hands up who else was like JK is in the video when it all kicked off? Hands up looking tough but really backing off from the drama.

    I’m guilty.

From memory he wasn’t sent off. It’s the first recorded use of the HIA, 10 minutes down the tunnel.

I am delighted at this news - a well deserved honour. I have no doubt he will handle it with dignity and aplomb.

Buck Shelford was one of the very best in my time, played with the greatest All Black - rugby player - I have seen, Sir Michael Jones, and led a pack I admired throughout its stellar dominance. The talent the All Blacks could field at 6, 7 and 8 back then was astonishing.

I have also been impressed with the several interviews and documentaries since, by his passion and candour about his fortunate experiences.

    Good on yer Sir Wayne.

@mn5 2008 and 3 week ban, I imagine now that'd go close to 12 weeks?

A different sport back then. I think this is deserved and possibly overdue. For me Buck brought an intensity to the team with its roots in what it meant to be a New Zealander, proud of the culture and able to draw strength from it. A hard man with mana when hard men played the game.

When Buck led the haka our team was fierce
