    Santner cut!

Henry, Blundell and Young as reserves.

Choice on CDG or Patel presumably based on weather/pitch/possibly toss

Pretty much. A possibility that both might play, as outlined above.

I think they've got the XV spot on - though I wouldn't have minded Mitch Jr instead of CdG.

Based on what ? I think @Godder has given some good reasons to pick CDGH.

Just in case anybody didn't already think the Walrus was a bit of a douche ..

You’d think being a clueless inflammatory fluffybunny about Rugby would take up enough of his time, now he’s moved to Cricket too ? He must have excellent time management skills.

He trolls about NZ at Olympics and probably any other sport too (despite our undeniable per capita success). Obviously a kiwi bloke stole his girl at some point.

@mn5 I think Mitchell is a better batsman than Colin and I don't expect our 5th seamer to play a defining role.

If we need a 5th seamer we're probably going to need an extra/better batsman more.

CdG is a fine no. 7 - if we want a specialist bat, fair enough, but an average of 36 at 7 is easily international class. I think his batting stats (SR 81.5) also reflect that his job is usually to go in and score quickly after the top 6 have put on sizeable score and they are angling for a declaration. The only reason not to pick him is bowling.

My impression is that he is weak against a seaming ball and speed. Don’t have the data but “a very good flat track bully”. That said, it is when his bowling is most effective for me. The thought of dropping one of the top four seamers to fit in both CDG and Patel ( read that in the herald ) just seems wrong. Hope not.

Dropping Wagner for CDG&Patel would be like dropping Sam Cane for a RWC semi

@majorrage and yet we thrashed the Indians just after they beat Tim Paine.
Me thinks tim might have a bit of tunnel vision...

Turns out the Aussie cricket team much like their public only pay attention to what happens in international cricket during the 3 months a year where they are beating up on opposition in their own backyard

Not advocating for this, but those who have no issue with a five man tail playing Patel - why not play Henry instead?

Is this pitch going to turn that much that we forego the new ball in the first innings or bet the farm bowling Patel at one end and rotating the other four quicks in the second innings?

Another consideration is the toss - if Williamson is leaning towards bowling first (like the last two County games at the Rosebowl) then picking Patel is a bit of a defensive/hedge-your-bets type move.

@godder From an Indian perspective, I'd love to see NZ pick CDG ahead of Patel or Ravindra.

Neither exactly strike me as world beaters and what you’re saying has merit but what flips it for me is the experience CDGH brings ( although he might not play if they select Patel )

One thing we don’t know is the plans they have on each Indian bat. That can have a bearing on selection as well.
I just think they will want the option of spin so Patel is in.

Cool. Tim Paine has given India the kiss of death.

A bonus chance to put some egg on face.

He's got to say that (and pray like hell it happens) given recent results against us both.

BTW Tim, what's Australia's team looking like for the Final? ... what's that?... you're not? ...

From the Pacific Island of South Africa ?

Pfft, his mighty motherland had to resort to stealing a colonial, and a ranga one just like that traitor Prince Harry at that.

I'm not too bothered about it. I'd just think the batting allrounder is likely to be more use than the bowling allrounder - if you characterize them like that. I also have a memory of CdG's batting being pretty woeful in the CWC Final, when a slightly bigger and more fluent innings would have won it. On the other hand, his bowling was good.

We'll see. I won't be amazed to see both CdG and Patel play at the expense of one of our seamers - and Stead even signaled this possibility on 3 News last night.

Who are you picking for your team newsjunkie?

I'd be pretty happy to see Jadeja sitting in the stands. Big match player!

We have 10 world class players, I'd be seriously passed off if they left one of them out.
