5 to 10 sick days has a big impact in average sick leave usage but it's not from an average of nearly 5 to an average of nearly 10
It started on July 24. We are only a couple of months in and that has been in lockdown, so the research is projection, not actuality surely. I wouldn't use the public service as a general indicator of the private sector either. You are quite right though it is a significant cost to employers government or otherwise. Over %50 cost increase if those days are averaged out.
My staff have been on paid holiday for a couple of months in the last 18 months sick or not.
@Hooroo Want a job? Or send me some staff? The healthy ones.
No! Do you know how hard it is to recruit in the CNI???
We got an idea when they gave you a job

@hooroo I know, at my last job my sick leave was capped at 100 days, and had <5 days sick in 10 years, my current job is 10 I think? I actually have no idea, I have had 2 sick days in 6 years here.
you are either a medical marvel, or one of those martyrs who feels the need to be at work no matter what

@mariner4life I just don't get sick...which means I'll likely get some rare cancer the day I retire and be dead in a month.
We get 5 Wellness days, to take off whenever not as annual leave, if you dont take them by end of year you lose them.

some of the new-age tech companies offer unlimited leave - be interesting to see the results of that over a 10+ year period
That's less common, but the companies and government departments that do offer that for sick leave in NZ don't report any difference between that and a reasonable finite figure. When I was looking into this for work, ANZ came up as the main proponents of uncapped sick leave in corporate NZ, although talking to union organisers and delegates from there, it's not all sunshine and roses (ANZ manage it quite strictly).
Unlimited annual leave is a trap unless there is a great workplace culture about taking leave (not to mention legal issues in NZ with the Holidays Act which requires unused annual leave to be paid out when someone leaves employment). Totally legal in the USA because there is no federal minimum, so it means no liability for payment which is great for startups needing to minimise liabilities on the balance sheet or who want to pretend they offer great benefits while the job is a relentless grind with no opportunity to take leave as there is nobody else to do the work in your absence.

We've got effectively unlimited sick leave - but as a part owner of the business, I hate taking time off But seriously, in a healthy business people take time if they're sick, get encouraged to, and the sick leave amounts aren't massive. The number of people who abuse it is very very low

I don't think that all that unusual, before I wnet o Aus to live I had worked at company for 15 years and used 5 days sick pay and a couple of them were for a funeral. I worked in Aus for 23 years (self employed) but only had 2 days off, never felt I worked when I was sick, just some people don't get sick.

@nzzp I had to have a 'discussion ' with one of my team about excessive sick leave, they'd average maybe half a dozen unpaid days a year.
worked with someone who was going on holiday, didn't have enough leave, so told the office they were taking sick leave as annual leave. Then were surprised when the leave got declined. Like, WTAF...

I know there were days when I felt off but popped a few pills and got on with it. Those days are gone now

@voodoo the place I've worked at for 18 years has always had unlimited sick leave. Also had it for the brief period I worked at ACC before that, although it only kicked in after 6 months? maybe a year? We have other really good conditions and on the whole it generates a lot of goodwill from staff. You get treated like an adult until you prove otherwise... I am in deep, deep, cover!! Can't even remember the initial mission!

@nzzp ha yea this person would start showing the signs and you'd know the call was coming on Friday/Monday morning....
Although there are those that get sick by watching someone on TV coughing...but you look at thier lifestyle and more often that not, this would be a factor.

@aucklandwarlord Agreeing as I do that the pair broke the law, I’m in two minds about the actual seriousness of what they did.
There is a process that allows people to use exemptions to cross the border. Sure, they misused that but my logic says whoever designed the process accepted that the risks of crossing the border are low, otherwise they would have banned exemptions outright wouldn’t they? If that’s the case does it really matter how far they travel once they are through?
If the process lets them leave it presumes they are safe so why can’t they travel onwards? If Mercer is OK why not Hamilton? Or Wellington… or Wanaka?
The example it sets is clearly not a good one. If I read in the news that these people flout the rules and get away with it, why should I toe the line anymore? Why should I not do whatever I want to and screw the rules?
I didn't go further than walking distance from my home for the three months of the first UK Lockdown but as soon as that fluffybunny went on a jolly to Barnard Castle and got away with it I said fuck it.

Realistically, I'd think about 500 hours of community service - perhaps serving up meals at a homeless shelter - would be about right for Mr. Willis and his partner.
A little overcharging of a pro bono case would solve that little dilemma...

As at 11:59pm 14 September 2021:
As the standard spacing between doses is 6 weeks, hopefully this means that we will have > 70% of 12 yo and over people fully vaccinated in about 6 weeks time.
