I bet we all have a photo like that.

How good does that beer look too? That is a VB, or a Carlton Draught, or a Lion Red or a DB. Heck, maybe it's a fucking Rheineck.

Either way, it's cold, sub-4.5% alcohol, and that bloke is about to enjoy 15 of them.

always remember dad enjoyed a Rheineck...or even the odd Joseph Coutts, normally in a swapa crate

Thanks! I always remember it as JK so was weird writing Coutts. Thought I had it wrong the whole time.

The family that basically established 'factory' brewing in NZ. They did change their name to Coutts in the third NZ generation and although the original Waitemata Brewery was designed and established by JK (the son of JK) it became DB under his son Morton Coutts.

Back to swapacrates though. The old Waitemata Sparkling Ale was a popular drop back in the day. A similar style to Coopers from Oz

Man I miss crates. From swapping them in Welly, to buying them over the bar at Gardies in Dunners. Environmentalists before our time

I miss crates but I don’t miss the beer that came in them.

When I was three, I was allowed a sip of the froth off Dad's DB draught. I didn't like it but I felt special as I was allowed it so would always ask.

Yup the south ‘rapa was DB land, amongst the farmers around us anyway. Moved to Tui at some point in my late teens. Don’t have a photo like that, cos almost no pics when I was a kid. But certainly introduced to beer that way!

Swapa crate is still very much alive and well in the King Country (and it doesn't just have to be Waikato...)

Same shit just more of it.

750ml bottles are exciting in your late teens and early 20s though.

Lion Brown or Bavarian Bitter at ours (not anymore, thank god).

My old man drank Lion Brown too, so that's what I was offered when I was young. I have never been a fan of Waikato Draught.

500 ml bottles of Heartland are nice.

One of the things I really like about Japan, especially as I can buy one on my way home and drink it while walking down the street.

@gt12 ha I used to work in an off-licence in the UK part time, and used to amaze me the number of people would get off the bus, come in, grab a can or 2 to drink while walking home...

2 dudes had returned form a football match that thier team had won, so bought a bottle of veuve clicquot (wasnt the cheap one either) and drank it straight form the bottle as they wandered home! 😂

@gt12 You can do that in NZ - as long as you don't mind some strange looks.

Always remember when I started living in Netherlands being told how great it was coz you could piss in the street 😕

Although I did discover the Politie weren't keen on you doing it on their nice leather coats.

Yeah it's generally only CBDs that have booze bans, and beaches!
