As you can see from the footage, 170 on that stretch is hardly dangerous, apart from people going "slowly". That stretch is only a few years old and is practically straight. Speed limits in Australia are absurdly slow on our best bits of road infrastructure.
Shit spot to stop as well - particularly as that Semi is coming up the hill.
I got done once at 129km/h in a 100 zone out near Dubbo. Smooth road, beautiful day, hadn't seen a car in an hour (back road through Mendooran is top notch). I'd just had new tyres and suspension put on the car so it was like brand new.
Around a sweeping corner on a hill, there's an SS Commodore coming the other way with a fucking huge aerial. Hitting the brakes is probably all that stopped me getting suspended for 3 months.

Australia has many roads where 100 or even 110 is stupid slow. It has many roads where 80 is dangerous.
What we lack is appropriate driver training to handle emergency situations.
Also has roads with no speed limts. At least that was my understanding when cruising at 140 down the Stuart.

Was true until they started messing with it.
I think there are still a few out there with the black stripe BUT the meaning varies depending on state.

I hate stories like this. That cop is achieving nothing but hatred for the police.

Why so slow?

Why so slow?
Because I was in GQ Patrol, towing an offroad camper trailer and my 13 year old son was steering from the passenger seat.

Fair. That’s twice recently you’ve destroyed me on comebacks.
Game needs upping.

@dogmeat What colours do they have? Aren't most modern cars' paint jobs pretty boring nowadays? Except for that deep metallic red colour that Mazda has, that is too awesome.
The copy of Alfa Romeo competizione red you mean? 😎
Could be. I'm betting the Mazda paint lasts longer than the Alfa stuff though. Just like everything else Mazda will outlast all the Alfa equivalents by about a century.

Standard.

Yeah. Only thing that had me slightly concerned was the possibility of stray animals. We had big roo bars but by fuck there would have been a huge mess.

They are very similar, it’s a stunning Colour.
I sat in a 6 month old 4C a couple of years ago. Beautiful car, stunning to look at. But you had to cross a 6 inch wide doorframe to get in it. And then it was very small inside.
It was completely bonkers. I’m glad they exist but I’ll never buy an Alfa

A neighbour had a white one. Looked and sounded amazing, but tiring to drive.

my 13 year old son was steering from the passenger seat.
aka "Autopilot".
TBF the straight stretches up there are often only 40-50km. It's no Eyre Highway...
Some good straight bits on the Barrier Highway between SA and Broken Hill as well. Probably only 35-40km but I remember one straight that you approach from a relatively higher position and it just screams out 'point and shoot' (apologies to Alex Baldwin)

I have a Giulia in competition red. It has its idiosyncrasies but I bloody love it. 3 years in and no significant mechanical issues 🤞

Been years since I was out there. I really need to book a 2-week road trip... Stupid family, limiting my dreams...
South of where I got busted speeding, through the Goonoo State Forest, there is an undulating straight stretch of only about 20km but you can see trucks coming from the entire distance - their lights, bordered by the state forest growing right up to the verge, look like something alien.

What continues to surprise me in regard to road trauma is peoples inflated belief about their own abilities. 94% of crashes occur because a human made a mistake. If we make a mistake at high speed, we kill ourselves, our mates and other road users.
The death messages I delivered after people hit trees, power poles etc still haunts me today and the scenes I attended will never leave me. If many of those drivers had been going slower it could have prevented a lot of trauma, including mine.
