was astonished by Savea there. He's outstanding, but just doesn't seem to fit our mix of loosies.

at being a rugby player.
He's really good across most facets of the game, athletic, fast and skillful.
Just ... short, smaller than others, and not complementary to the other players we have around him

he doesn't hit hard in the tackle, he can't clean a ruck to save himself (on either side of the ball) nor does he really like too, our turnover stats say he isn't good on teh ground either. And this guy is supposed to be a #8?
So he's an obvious athlete and is pretty good after contact. That's it?
Colour me massively underwhelmed. I am convinced the vast majority of people only watch youtube highlights of games given the absolutely shit takes i constantly see.

I'd happily have him in my AB squad. Great off the bench- and can play a role in a loose forward trio that's right for him at the very top level. That's just not our loosies right now (combined with obstinate coaching)
but yeah, I don't see him as the best 8 in the world

Back row in particular can't work in isolation ie, the three need to be complimentary. Put a Cane/Papali'i and then a Kaino type 6 with Savea and my bet is there would be no arguments about Savea's merits.
I've come to the conclusion Savea and Akira can't play in the same backrow, puts too much pressure on our openside to do the grunt work

He’s already showing signs of a downward slide.
We need tanks that can scrum AND cart the ball up strong.Probably a bit unfair as the other way to look at it is that it's great not to lose his experience overseas and he can help the young bucks. I just hope he doesn't become a roadblock.

They are signing old All Blacks on long contracts ...
On the other hand many lament the experience drain when older All Blacks are lost overseas. I am happy for the likes of Moody to.hang around NZ and pass on their knowledge.
