if ever a film was made for @Kruse I thought it'd be this
but on looking, no, that is PART 2, Part 1 stars Eric 'busiest actor in Hollywood' Roberts!!

Top Gun Maverick
I started my experience by watching Top Gun. Still a very good film, it was good to recap the story where it all began.
CF Jr had seen TGM and raved about it so I was expecting a lot. And as DM said the movie doesn't disappoint. It uses the original soundtrack, in a Star Wars like manner. Great that they used one of the original film's iconic songs. The story had a bigger mission as its centrepiece, which provided for a great finale. Lots of nods to the old film, plenty of action, and the theatre got a bit dusty ##spoiler
when Mav and Goose's son made up
##endspoilerAn all star cast, Val made an appearance, and Jennifer Connolly looked hawt as usual. 5 beach football touchdowns out of 5 impossible missions
Really enjoyed this. Actually first film GF and I have been to together. Were planning it for more than 2 years. Used money from recycling all our bottles and cans. After 2 years that was more than enough to pay for farking gold class!
It wasn't a great or complex film, but it never aimed to be. Cruise just wanted to entertain and do justice to the character of Maverick and make a worthy sequel to an 80s classic. Succeeded on every front.
Had 2 minor quibbles. I didn't like most of the other pilots. They just didn't strike me as the best of the best. Kind of like the astronauts in Deep Impact (if anyone remembers it). They seemed like teens rather than the very best pilots in the world. The other was:
##spoiler
Them getting shot down then stealing a plane. That was all a bit Comical.
##endspoilerBut otherwise I was greatly entertained and if anything the character of Maverick was made even cooler. Hats off to Tom Cruise, who btw looks ridiculous for a guy who will soon be 60.
-
Agree with your second quibble but the whole episode was the forgiveness arc. Having put them in that mess they almost needed a deus ex machina. But is a very minor quibble
As for Cruise - somewhere there's an attic with a painting like this
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel yeah I'm willing to forgive quibble 2 as it was such a good film and by then I was okay with a little bit more silliness to complete what was a satisfying story arc for Maverick and Rooster. As to quibble one, it is difficult to compare pilots when you saw the original. No doubt Viper and Jester would have fucked all of those millennials up

Yeah, Hangman was like a jock character from one of those old screwball films. And who would choose the call sign Fanboy? Bob was also ridiculous. I quite liked Phoenix. GF commented on how it was refreshing that there was none of that chip on shoulder girl power bs. They were there on merit and nobody gave a shit about gender or race or who they slept with.
But what really gave me a horn is that line: "Maybe so sir...but not today."
Fark that is cool.

I've not watched it yet, but I accidentally caught a line from one of the young twats along the line of 'who's going to teach us cos we're the best' Arseholes wouldn't last 5 mins with that attitude in any high performance role, let alone fast jet aircrew.
Anyway looking forward to the flying stuff!

My thoughts exactly. They looked like they belonged in a cafe texting rather than flying a fighter jet. But that was but a minor quibble. The flying scenes are ridiculous. So much cooler than CGI.
Caught a glimpse of some new Brad Pitt film that is set on board a bullet train. CGI looks cartoonish. It seems to me that alot of the CGI is actually getting worse. -

She was proud of the fact she was only one of two cast members (I assume she did not count Cruise as the other one) who didn't spew their ring out during in flight filming

Jurassic World something (the latest one): So, I made the claim I would never watch another Jurassic World movie after watching the second one, which I think was the worst movie with the worst ending that I saw whichever year it came out. But, needing to use up some vouchers and there being nothing else to see I went to this. And I was pleasantly surprised. It is just a bog standard blockbuster movie but that's not a bad thing as it wasn't rubbish like the previous one.
Was good to have the original 3 actors back to go along with the new cast.
Won't win any awards but decent enough 2 hours in VMax.
I also saw today that they're making a Joker sequel. Which begs the question, which two Scorcese movies do people think Philips is going to combine and remake (somewhat inferiorly) this time round?

OK finally got to see my homo-erotic beach
volleyballrugby movie (although spoiled by some girlies in it). Was a good blast, worth seeing in the cinema. Cheesey as fuck, even more unrealisitic, but at least it didn't take itself as seriously as the first one. Flight sequences, when they were jsut valley flyiing, gave me wood. Shed a tear for my buddies lost, esp Moses -The Best Yank that has ever Existed (TM) who died in an F15 accident, when he didn't eject in time. His backseater, another buddy RAF on exchange, lived as the backseater goes out first. The Goose stuff really hit home for me.4 using two hands to pull back on a elctro hydraulic stick out of 5 flares defeating radar missiles by exploding them.

So what movies have you seen recently that weren’t influenced by previous movies? Seems to be parroting a lazy criticism of the film by people that didn’t like it’s politics.

It was an ok movie, but it was a complete rehash of those other two other superior movies regardless of its politics (IIRC the director even noted that when promoting the movie). It's a legitimate criticism even if those who "like" its politics don't like the criticism.
Plenty of people with my same politics liked The Joker.

It's a lazy critique IMO. Like I said, plenty of other films are inspired by other films - QT has made a career out of it.

It's not lazy at all. Just because you sat down, watched the movie, enjoyed it, and didn't mind that it was a rehash of two superior movies, doesn't mean others can't criticise it for that reason.
QT gets criticised for that inspiration as well. Reservoir Dogs got criticism for taking inspiration from City if Fire. That's no more or less lazy than critiquing The Joker.
