I have no issue with his captaincy or mana in the team.

I do. I'm a huge Sam Cane fan as a player.

He hasn't displayed the qualities to be a good captain.

He was captain when Chiefs went winless in Super Rugby Aotearoa a couple of years ago.

That said - whilst I don't rate him as a captain - I don't think it would be nearly as much of an issue if he was still peak Sam Cane. He's clearly not the player he used to be and can't demand a starting spot.

    @KiwiMurph “qualities”?
Not being overly effective is a bit different to qualities in my lingo. Maybe dictionary boy will sort it out 😉

There's more to being a leader than being a good or effective player.

Keven Mealamu was a wonderful player. He was not a wonderful Blues captain.

BTW if my sauce is correct the reason for delaying the announcement of the team has no conspiracy attached. It is for far more normal and “human” reasons.
    It may become evident soon.

Agree. That’s not what I was getting at. Cane has leadership qualities in my view and going by the respect his players have for him. I just find him not very effective in on field management of the game or ref “playing”
I still think he’s an effective player. The last game looked like he was carrying a heavy burden and that’s a sad way to end. Hopefully he can do a Ross Taylor.

He was fucked way before 9 months ago. He must have a gestation period longer than an elephant.

@KiwiMurph maybe unburdening him from the captaincy might reignite him?

That said, if Foster is doing this now, he is an utter fluffybunny

The journos have it all wrong anyway. Ardie is the new captain. You heard it on the fern first.
    I have a sauce.

hopefully you are trolling as ardies was the worst of all the captains used last year

Ardie Savea is our David Pocock. Great player in certain facets, but selecting him at 8 with the other guys we've got unbalances the forward pack, and makes us a worse team.
So I guess making him captain sounds about right for our brains trust. At least he'd be able to fire the guys up by telling them that the games in SA are as big as Origin.

Savea is making plenty of World XV selections, even in a losing cause. Used in the right way, he is an asset.

Regarding the no. 7 being the main pilferer of ball at the breakdown, it didn't used to be like this. McCaw was of course brilliant at it early in his career, but as time progressed he selected the best time to go in on the ball rather than be on the look out for it al the time, say like Pocock.

In McCaw's team (up to 2015), there were jackals aplenty all over the team. Mealamu, Coles, Retallick, McCaw, Read, Conrad Smith, Ben Smith all could jackal. The current team doesn't seem to have the same.

I can’t remember what test it was last year but I remember the All Blacks looked at their very best when they had a trio of Blackadder, Ardie and Sotutu. I wouldn’t mind seeing that trio again with Dalton off the bench.

Then again, I think Blackadder is out for the season so that won’t happen anyway.

@The-Docter said in All Blacks squad - The Rugby Championship:

Cane needs to lose captaincy, therefore at the very least doesn’t start. Simple!

I think you have it arse about face. I have no issue with his captaincy or mana in the team. My questions are simply whether he’s our best option in the 7 jersey.
That’s either because they think Ardie can move back to openside (which I’m not convinced on. He has to be there but is neither a 7 or 8 in the traditional setups) or Ardie stays 8 and DP gets more time.
I agree that if DP is going to take over openside then he needs to get up to speed before the RWC but that solves nothing in regards to the balance of the looses.

Loose forward balance is important. And we need to be conscious of the fact that NH refs rucks differently, so skills needed may be a bit different.

For me Ardie is not a starting eight. Not a ruck disrupter, lineout goto, big hitter, etc.. can see a role at 8 later in game as things open up.

Two obvious 8s for squad are Hoskins and Grace. If we take two bashers at 6 then Akira and PGS (who in my mind is in competition with Frizzel).

So Ardie ought to start at 7 if at all. IMO we need ruck physicality in our starting 7 so Cane or Paps.

So if Paps is starting 7, then Cane should be dropped completely. Or start with Cane and put Ardie on bench.

@The-Docter seriously, does anyone on this this forum truly believe we can win the next world cup with Sam Cane as captain?
