Went three straight days of working, hitting a deadline on caffeine and without sleep, but damn if I was going to miss the midnight premiere of District 9. It was definitely a bit different than I expected. Not as splatter disgusting, for one. I thought it was a pretty good to excellent sci-fi thriller, not perfect, yet worth the time. Definitely not Hollywood, but the conventions are there. It wasn't until after the movie talking about it with friends that there were a number of fascinating discussion points that elevate it beyond the typical. I will see it again, slightly less hopped-up on sleep deprivation next time. 8/10.
I concur. Bloody good sci flick. It's been a long time since I've seen a film with such an original concept. Some people may find a few holes in the whole aliens living on earth thing (actually reminded me a bit of the V mini series that people have been on about) but it is really well made and gripping. I'll definitely see it again.

You can watch a combat sequence demo Blomkamp did for the abandoned Halo film here:
District 9 is a brilliant movie, very interesting at the start and emotionally gripping towrds the end - quite magnificant stuff really. Loved the documentary style methodology (instead of having some twit narrate and explain the whole thing to you at the beginning of the movie)...

Highly reccomend it xzxgood
Just back from seeing the awesomeness of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. Only he could get away with playing just a bastard and be so damn likable.
Just seen the dvd. Terrific movie. xzxgood Didn't expect the outcome but it was a great way of finishing the story.

I've added "Get off my lawn" to my other favourite one-liners.
Seven Pounds; more evidence of the acting talent that is Wil; Smith - 7.8/10
Will Smith is a terrific actor. I must be the only person in New Zealand that didn't think much of the `Men in Black' movies (which I went to see because both Will Smith and the fabulous Tommy Lee Jones was in it) but all the other movies that I've seen him in have been thrilling, tear-jerking or funny.

Some I'd recommend: Independence Day, Enemy of the State and Pursuit of Happyness.
The Day the Earth Stood Still; more evidence of the lack of acting talent that is Keanu Reeves (mind you, shit script TBF)
Saw the original 1951 movie on television once and although the special effects may appear corny today, the storyline was far better than today's remake. By all accounts, instead of remaking the original movie they based their story on the original short story that the original movie was based on. Confused...? xzxwacko1

I don't think they made enough of the evil robot. He scared the living daylights out of me. Instead they gave us a PC ending. Boring.

By the way, the little boy in the movie, Jaden Smith, is Will Smith's son in real life.

It seems to be fashionable these days to take the base material as your muse. I think it makes its easier to call your movie a "re-imagining" than a remake. Like "willy wonka and the chocolate factory" as opposed to "charlie and the chocolate factory"

District 9 which was great. Even the girlfriend enjoyed it. I enjoyed Startrek but this was heaps better.

The Wrestler which was good but not great. Great acting was what made the movie.

The Orphanage which is a horror with a great story and good ending. Worth a watch but is subtitled so stay away if you can't be bothered reading.

How scary' is it? I'm asking as a huge sci-fi fan (but one who gets terrified in ghost / horror movies). xzxshok

Anyone seen the latest Terminator movie? It looks really bleak', whereas all the others have been great sci-fi-action movies.

Not that scary. A few moments that might make you squeamish, though.

Gran Torino was all class. Really enjoyed it. The bit I liked (or one of them) was when he gobbed at the old lady and she did that huge gob back ... xzxsarcastic

The scene with the black dudes is probably my favourite. Interestingly the young white boy walking Sue home is Clints real life son, have a look at him the resemblance is pretty strong.....

Yeah. That scene was frigging excellent. My other fave (a bit more serious) was when he locked the lad in the basement and made his confession about what he'd done in Korea. It acted like a confessional and I thought it was a very clever scene.

I must go buy that film when it comes out. It is brilliant.

Never picked the ending but thought it was pretty powerful.

I was fully expecting a massive shootout and hoping it wasn't going to get too corny. Was disappointed for a nano second and thought: brilliant ending.

Absolutely - first thought was Nooo, Clint always wins but then, second thought - Clint did win, just in a different way. Class.

Yep. Me too. Thought it was going to be Dirty Harry but it wasn't - more like Million Dollar Baby's notion of self-sacrifice. All class and thought after the initial "holy sh#t" had worn off I thought it was perfect. I guess if he'd gone DH on them the media would have made it out to be a racial crime (God knows Clint's character provided them with plenty of ammo on that one), but this way they were nothing but dirty wannabe gang-bangers.

This was nothing more than me feeling nostalgic....I decided to watch some old school movies I watched and loved as a kid. None of which are regarded as major cinematic achievements. No anthropology type human nature piece here....

American Ninja 1 and 2. My favourite action movies for a long time. I would watch them over and over. Once revisited...utter crap. Some unintentional laughs but crap all the same. Steve James what a legend. Of the two the second was the most enjoyable to laugh at.

Tango and Cash. Loved it especially for Terri hatcher. Revisited...Terry still wortha look other wise Shite! Stallone and Russell just aren't Riggs and Murtaugh.

Best of the best. A martial arts movie starring absolutely no martial artists in any of the starring roles. Eric Roberts and Chris Penn. Revisited surprisingly still worth watching.

They Live. Roddy piper the wrestler in a John Carpenter alien conspiracy movie. Still fantastic and has what might be the greatest street brawl ever on film. Apparently getting a remake.

Big trouble in little China. Loved this movie then love it now. Some of the special effects stuff is great for the time it was made though the monster affects are all a bit "guy in a gorilla suit".
Would love to see a remake of this.

Riggs and Murtagh - best 80s pair on film. Almost pipped by Crockett and Tubbs, but not quite.

I liked Big Trouble in Little China too. Bloody hoot. Tango and Cash - oh yeah. Terry was excellent.

They live ... bored me then, would bore me now. Street brawl went on too long. Strangely I do wish this had had a follow on because it had the genesis of something quite cool, but it didn't work as a stand alone for me.
