Phillips has been batting 4 for Otago and usually batted 3 or 4 for Auckland.

Santner bats at 5 for ND, if he ever gets to play test cricket again (unlikely) he'll be batting at 7 or 8, so that gives you some idea about the difficulty of batting in domestic cricket.

To me Phillips looks like he would be a great test 5 or 6, maybe even an awesome one.

Interesting to see Andre Adams right up this First Class wickets list. Chat's average is a good reminder that Hadlee didn't take lots of wickets just 'because no-one at the other end' at the top level.

Meanwhile a bloke called Glenn Phillips showed concentration, skill, and control (not words I associate with Henry Nicholls) to score 147 off 244 balls to deny the Cantabs (along with a bit of rain) in the Plunket Shield. Henry Shipley and Ish Sodhi bowled well for Canterbury.

One kid to watch is 19 year-old Muhammad Abbas. His dad played 1st class stuff in Pakistan before coming to NZ with a 1 year-old son where the dad played a bit for Auckland and Wellingto ma'am no
    n. Anyway, the boy dominated the NZ U19 champs last month and scored a Plunket Shield 100 for Wellington the other day.

I don't think Phillips is four though and Mitchell is also not a four. So that brings us back to Nicholls vs Young and Young hasn't taken his chances to put more pressure on Nicholls's position.

    Based on what ?

Paddles also averaged 31 with the bat at first class level. Coupled with that freakish bowling average it’s easy to see how absolutely dominated County Cricket but unlike a lot of guys there ( Hick, Ramprakash, Gatting, Lamb etc ) he did the business at the highest level too.

That’s a real surprise that Adams is that high, he was a really exciting player, I wish he’d played way more than he did. Can anyone remember why he didn’t ?

Back on topic interesting to see the much maligned Bracewell actually get a wicket. In your face Mitch Santner !

So Tickners gone for 55 off 9 and we've burned all our reviews. Great day's play so far...

How long is the Lankan tail? /straw

Looms like a long tail to me, Rajitha at 8 ?

Bloody hell Southee's bowling well. Balls' on a string at the moment (which sounds kinda weird out of context).

    Into the tail now thankfully

Edit: This Jayasuriya has an average of 3.75 with 15 runs to his name off 4 innings. Not massively better at FC either... chance to roll them quickly

    A stats(s).

Since Ross Taylor's retirement. Henry Nicholls has averaged 23.78, in the 8 test matches. So, since he has moved up to number 4 to replace Ross.
He scored a century in that first test after Ross.
Since that test, he has averaged 17.53 in the next 7 tests as the senior batsman stepping up a role to fill that more senior number 4 position.
A lot of those matches have been without Kane, so makes his role harder, but also makes his seniority more important, and his lack of output more damaging.

This hasn't been noticed too much IMO, because Darryl Mitchell has replaced the runs of peak Ross, if not the exact batting position.
The other factor obscuring this is that Ross Taylor also had a declining output at number in his final year to averaging 26. HIs final 2 years averaging 29.

Bracewell favoured Oram and Franklin in the allrounder role. Not terrible decisions.
Adams was selected and pidgeon-holed as an ODI player, when he was actually a much better red-ball player.
Defintely worth a go in tests as specialist bowler, rather than allrounder, in the late 00s, in hindsight.
He moved to play in England as he had a passport that meant he could play county cricket as a local.

Was bowling coach of NSW or one of the Sydney bash teams, last I heard (after about 1 season as Auckland bowling coach). A real loss (to NZ) on the coaching front I hear.

Edit. He did an interview on The Top Order podcast a year or 2 ago, that I listened to. Was good. Would answer your question more fully.

Yeah he kinda gave away the bowling to focus on his batting which I reckon wasn’t a good decision ( apparently Paddles said he was like a left handed version of himself early on ).

Went from being a very good bowler who could bat a bit to being a typical bits and pieces BC all rounder.

Interesting about Adams, took a few wickets in his only test.

Assistant bowling coach at the Sydney Sixers and NSW bowling coach.
I know Mitch Starc rated him highly he helped out when he was struggling last season.
Starc spends sometime at the HPC here in Brisbane.
When his wife is up visiting the Uncles.

    Interesting bowling figures.

Outstanding from Southee and Henry with fuck all support from anyone else by the looks.

I hope one of them gets a Michelle, the two batsmen having a combined average of 7 should definitely help.

Very, very ugly from Tickner ( and I’m not talking about his creepy mo )

@MN5 I'd hope they just keep bowling Southee/Henry until the wicket. Make a race for the Michelle.

Well done Southee. Leading from the front.

Clearly miss Boult, when we lose Southee that will be the time we revert to overly green decks lol.. well done Southee on the 5 wickets. 355 all out

Henry also did well but gap to next best seamer on 1st innings deck is significant if Tickner is the answer.

Wagner doesn't get the grief from me that others are giving, his role is not/should not be in that space. Why he was asked to bowl Wagnerball early was a real surprise. When he bowled fuller later he was ok and had a couple of opportunities late yesterday that fell near fielders instead of to them. It was clear listening to Flem this morning that he completely agrees.

But as a unit probably not good enough SL getting an above average 1st innings total on this pitch and wishing they probably had an extra batsman right now

Especially when, on current player depth, Wags will have to keep going until he's 45...

Indeed, a guy like Tickner even getting a look in screams of how shallow our depth pool is now.

We can’t get big Kyle Jamieson back fast enough.

Latham needs to have one of his significantly large home innings right now, I cant see him and Devon being on 200/0 later today though..no chance
