Jim Brown, football great and activist, dies at 87

Jim Brown, one of the greatest professional and college football players of all time, "passed peacefully" in his Los Angeles home on Thursday night, his family said.

I wasn't born when he played, but they say he was one of the greatest running backs ever. I remember him in the Dirty Dozen though, it was probably quite a strong role for a black man in America at that time. He was one of a crop of prominent socially aware black athletes at the time, Ali, Abdul Jabar among others.

It says something about his ability and impact that footage makes it look like tackling was an optional extra in the NFL when Jim played.

Yup. In an era that most pundits agree was much tougher than now. He was Bo Jackson, before Bo Jackson

@Duluth arguably one of the stronger influences of the whole Manchester scene..even played with Ian Brown (Stone Roses) a few time too

IIRC, Macca singled him out for high praise - which speaks volumes for his talent

His brother has been convicted of being a paedo but apparently the more shocking thing is that he and his co-presenter no longer get along and he has resigned 😳

    Sums up modern Britain....

Well he's not interested in her two main assets, so not unexpected.

@pakman RNZ On Saturday replayed a mix tape Jenkin did for them back in 2017

    The Mixtape: Barry Jenkin

During the 1970s Barry Jenkin aka Dr. Rock was a champion of a free-spirited playlist that embraced music that defied commercial accessibility. For many music lovers, his radio broadcasts and time fronting Radio With Pictures was a beacon of taste that frequently saw him at odds with his producers....

Usually when you get a selection as eclectic as this it's merely to show off how cool somone is, but having had the opportunity to sit in the studio with him in the 70's Jenkins taste really was this diverse.

Artist: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Herbert von Karajan
Song: Don Giovanni, K. 527, Act I: Ouverture

    Artist: Jimi Hendrix Experience
    Song: Hey Joe

    Artist: Joni Mitchell

    Jenkin was our John Peel.
Certainly introduced me to a listening direction back in the RWP days.

@Nepia I was shocked when I read that he had passed away. Ray Stevenson had supporting roles in a lot of movies/TV series that many of us would have watched.

Don't Come The Raw Prawn, Or Shrimp, With Me - The Beast

The expression ā€œDon’t come the raw prawn with meā€ originated among the Australian services in World War II. It refers to an attempt to deceive someone or misrepresent a situation – basically, ā€œDon’t try to put one over meā€. While a raw prawn might be difficult to swallow, prawns have always been a...
