I told the missus last night I get to spend an entire week at the Basin watching us play Australia, after listing off the dates she informed me that I'll be at a wedding in Wanaka for the entire bloody thing. I'm gutted.

Stead retained as NZC reject splitting Black Caps coaching role

Stead retained as NZC reject splitting Black Caps coaching role

Gary Stead has signed on for another two years after suggesting earlier this year his job needed to be split into two for Test and limited-overs cricket.

    Sad news, this.

Instinct says they probably struggled to find a decent candidate wanting to take over a team on the edge of such a huge age and talent cliff.

    Well, lost to UAE overnight.

Underdone, pointless T20 overseas. Presumably it's a coffer filling exercise. Chapman played well, but sounds like atrocious fielding cost us.

    Ugh.

NZC still have delusions of grandeur that we have enough depth to safely field B and C teams…

We continue our fine trend of having the depth of a paddling pool when it comes to our opening and first and second drop batsmen.

@Windows97 You could probably say the same about numbers five through eleven as well if we were being perfectly honest about our depth.

@Higgins Well yes that is true - I really could have left it as "NZ cricket has the depth of a paddling pool" and left it at that.

in the mean time Zac Foulkes getting good exposure again this season playing in the 2O/20 comp for Wynnum here in Brisbane.
A lot of imports from other states playing as well as the Australian players.
He will be getting some great experience.

That's good he's back playing, as he missed the entire second half of the domestic season last season.

Virtually zero domestic cricket media here so get no idea of the seriousness of any injury unless they're a blackcap.

    NZ A 147
    Aus A 263

    Kuggeleijn with 74/5
Bancroft only got 14 in his audition as an opener

Hopefully the NZ second innings goes a bit better

While nz is reverting to its normal depth level, after a decade long talent bulge moves towards the exit end.

The talk of "paddling pool depth" is relevant, to Australia. Cameron Bancroft? Is he the most interesting talking point of an Aus A team? Gee, that's a worry.

An 'interesting' NZA selection I'd expect to get thrashed fresh off a plane from winterland.

It looks a little less than an 'A' side. Not that these guys are great, but Harris and Renshaw should be in a genuine 'A' side

    True. But same for NZ.

Missing the entire raft of what would be the realistic fringe test batsmen - Young, Ravindra, Phillips Chapman etc

The NZA bowling, no real excuses, though. There is no one missing due to other commitments (e.g. not injury).

It's hard to get a genuine A team out on the field these days, unless it is your actual priority. There is always a blackcaps (or insert other country) white ball series going on at the same time.
