Movie review thread...

Cool, good indicator it’s a good movie if the critics don’t like it.
Villeneuve's movies range from great (Sicario) to garbage (Prisoners), so we'll see.
Think a lot of the mixed reviews are due to this being half of the book.

This looks great
-
@kiwiwomble don't read any of the sequels then. The series disappears up its own arsehole never to re-emerge.

It would be nice if you could instantly see whether a critic and yourself ever shared the same opinion on movies, so if a critic panned it you could either know instantly you'd agree or love it.
I'm going to see Dune regardless.
Fuck yeah, me too, can’t wait !

@antipodean ideally there could be a list like IMDB shows what an actor has been in, what the reviewer has reviewed, click on it...that way you learn which ones to ignore or pay attention to

I've wanted a system like this for years - for all review type sites. Trip-Advisor, for example.
You've got people on there giving a mcdonalds "restaurant" a 5-star rating, and then others giving top restaurants 1/5 because the sommelier used the wrong hand to pour the wine. And those two people have equal weight (well... as relates to their reviews... I'm guessing the maccas fan probably has a couple more X's in front of the L.)
Democracy - just... doesn't... work. -
The Equalizer. I really enjoyed this film, Denzel Washington was the understated underestimated-meant-to-be-dead ex-spy/fixer, Martin Csokas (one of Shortland Street's own) played his usual role as Russian ex-Spetnaz baddie. Lots of violence, coincidentally the finale was in a hardware store where Den showed everyone how to weaponise all the good stuff in store. 4 dead Russian hoods out of 5 nail guns
I recently watched E2, and at the time I quite enjoyed it. On seeing E1 I would have to downgrade my rating of the sequel. Just not as clever, not as violent, 3.5 wayward inner city teens out of 5 ex-workmates gone bad

the second and third movie lost their way, but I am sure I will still watch number four
-
@bayimports the first is my favourite movie of all time
the 2nd gets way more hate than it deserves, you'll struggle to find a better set piece than everything from Merovingian to Morpheus and the Key Maker getting pulled off the top of the truck.
I reckon i have seen the 3rd twice.
i will watch this

i was reading about this this morning, so apparently you get different snippets depending on when you go onto the site, and the time changes to match when you see it
obviously doesn't change if the movie will be good but im glad they're trying
@mariner4life agreed, first one was great, changed a lot of what we expect from scifi/action....i think ive seen the other two twice including at the cinema....but im not actually sure i could explain the plot...got pretty confusing, might force myself to re watch

For all the rabbit holes you can go down with all the pyscho analysis parallels with the works of Nietzsche etc, the action is still very cool..I will also be watching
-
@bayimports will easily wait based on what came before. I was a massive fan of the original. It took years to get through the second. There's no way I'll watch the third.

That's about me, tho I have seen the 3rd a few more times

I re-watched all 3 Matrix movies last year and watched the hours of special features with each Blu-ray disc too. Well I had plenty of time during that lockdown.
It's highly unlikely that Resurrections will be as good as the original, but this is a movie you need to see on the big screen.
-
seems like a lot has changed since the "good guys" won, big ask to explain how we go "here" as well as get to any kind of conclusion in one movie
the wife has said she'd like to watch all three before this comes out, thats my weekend planned, a bad action sci/fi is still better than most chick flicks
-
@kiwiwomble sounds like a good idea, I'd do the same, it's been years since I've watched them and I did quite like the first, think I'd prefer to watch it in the cinema, they were quite good looking on the big screen if I recall.
