Heading down to the brilliantly named "The Third Eye - Tuatara's Temple of Taste" tonight with a mate to sample their latest goodies. Among them we'll be trying a "Pumpkin Ale" a 'G n T Sour" "Oatmeal Stout" and "Heather Lives on".
Will give a full report tomorrow.

I'm not quite sure what it is, and I feel a bit of a prick for saying so but Tuatara really don't do it for me like Garage Project or Panhead do.
Ordered a tasting tray and started with the G n T sour. I do quite like a sour beer every now and again but this one didn't do it for me in the slightest. "Tasted just like a Sav" was my mates verdict. Pumpkin Ale was next and apparently this is a popular one in the States and sold up a storm at Beervana....again I didn't rate it that highly, Tuatara beers just seem to taste a bit "empty" to me for whatever reason ? Their Oatmeal Stout was very good....but I've had better and Heather lives on also had that slightly empty sort of taste.
Again, just my opinion, they do some other decent beers but this bunch ? poor overall.

Had a couple of beers from Lakeman brewing company last night ( breaking my new imposed "no drink during the week" policy )
"Badonk a Donk" which is a Black double IPA and "Hairy Bastard" which is a standard IPA.
Both really excellent, very impressed and cool labels. Probably not at Garage Project/Panhead levels but above Tuataras offerings.....

Had a couple of nice brews last night;
had something from sawmill brewery at the Britomart Country club, it was stout in colour but was more lager like in consistency, was a nice drop too....was thier rotating craft beer
Then had a few Pilsners at Tyler Street Garage, was good but it was labelled as TSG and the barman said it was made by Lion, so not sure if you can get it elsewhere under another label.
With dinner at Monsoon poon I had Hallertau #1 Luxe Kolsch....was very nice, then had Garage Project Happy Daze, another very nice beer.
After that, I stopped the beers and moved to another bar and onto bourbon!

Did you have the Fire Cracker Chicken at Monsoon Poon? That will make the beers flow quickly!!

I'm surprised you can actually write it all up mate.Haha, indeed! Was a very long session, starting at 3pm and finished at about 2am....I held up surprisingly well, although the 2nd day of the course was a struggle....
@Hooroo I don't think we did, was a dozen of us so we ended up having the banquet, although we did end up having this vodka, coconut and chilli cocktail...that was hard work!

I was reading an article about Williams warn and their home brew systems in koru mag on the flight back from Wtn on Friday pm.
I had to fly back from Wtn to go to Tate Auckland at Western Springs and bugger me the inventor Ian Wiliams had a stand.
So we had a bit of a yarn and a couple of cleansing ales as you do and now I have the opportunity to buy a discounted system if I jump in this week.
I did a search and DK posted this link to their site http://www.williamswarn.com/The-WilliamsWarn/BrewKeg#.WDAdrLXXfYU about a year ago.
But has anyone actually used their stuff. On the face of it sounds quite appealing. Self contained system, award winning beers made with it etc, but I am appealing to the collective wisdom of the fern.
I have two concerns - one do I really need something that makes it easier to drink more beer and two I seem to be a bit of a sucker for toys at Taste. In the last 3 years I've spent about $10K on a coffee machine, BBQ and smoker... I hardly ever use the coffee machine, the BBQ about a dozen times a year and haven't even put the smoker together yet

My very sensible mate had one and he got rid of it after a year with a bit of gentle persuasion from his wife as he just started drinking a bit too much and put on too much weight.
The problem was it was too good and it was just too easy to poor a beer from the tap as you were going past.
He has gone back to just buying beer and his weight has got back to normal. I tried a couple of his and they were amazing!

@Hooroo That's my concern. I need to lose more weight not put it back on.
Having said that - it did look bloody good and I can see myself enjoying the crafting of the beer.
From what I was told it works out @ about $10/litre less than what I normally pay from an offie too

@dogmeat That's why he purchased it in the first place as it was a cheaper way for better beer.
In the end though it it didn't make up for the health side of it. I specifically mentioned he was a sensible mate as if anyone has self control, it was him.
He was happy to be rid of it in the end

It's a really nice piece of kit, but you're fundamentally paying for convenience to get extract brews on tap cheaply and easily.
If you were inclined, you could set yourself up with
- a fridge
- temp controller
- fermenter
- keg, tap C02 bottle and regulator
all for less than $1k. Then you can brew up the same stuff and keg it yourself for peanuts. What you don't get is the shiny stainless steel conical fermenter, the integration and the shiny shiny.
Of course, you are then set up to go all grain brewing, which leads to great beers and shitloads of weight gain (I put on 10kg the first year I had craft beer on tap in my house).
Home brewing is totally worth it. Best hobby ever.

Nice craft beer = weight gain. No two ways about it and I have about 20 750 ml bottles in the garage and am getting 40 more in the next couple of days.
Fuck.
My discipline so far is, well, "good" despite the odd blowout. Funnily enough if I have a mini session and demean myself with Corona or Heinie the weight doesn't change at all. A few of the blokes I brew with are skinny mountain biking types......I enjoy drinking beer not biking so HIIT cardio and weights will have to do.

I'm a lazy searcher, but does "Off Topic" have a thread on whisky / whiskey?
I've recently hit 40 and started watching Mad Men, so I felt obliged to invest in a couple of single malt Scotches. It's quite a complicated world, but booze is always rewarding.
I have purchased a Glenlivet Founders Reserve and a Glenmorangie 10 year old, with the latter the standout of those two. Each has set me back less than $60, which is pretty much bottom dollar for a single malt. I'm not really willing to go too much higher pricewise yet, so does anyone have any suggestions on good scotch in the NZD 60-80 range or equivalent?
I have tried a few Islay varieties and I am probably keen to develop my taste elsewhere for now.
