Black Caps vs Windies Series
-
Yay summer is here, ahead of a huge test schedule facing the caps is the first test vs the Windies starting tomorrow at the Basin
Team wise we will be without Watling and it appears Southee too. Not sure who will be picked to bowl at 130 kms and get smacked around while we argue over why he hasn’t been dropped by Hesson. Sounds like it’s between Matt Henry and Lachi Fergusson -
Brilliant post. I do love a good cynical yarn about the Black Caps....
That Windies team looks beyond poor though. Surely we got this comfortably?

Ha hahahahahaha. You know damn well they are playing the Black Caps.

Valid point but we're pretty good at flogging bad teams at home, getting confident and then getting hammered by ( insert good test team here ) when they tour early in the New year.

Also a fair call. That's how they do it - build us up just to tear us down. In some ways it is more entertaining than supporting the ABs. Not as rewarding - but definitely more challenging.

Just been scrolling through the Windies squad. Only Kemar Roach has anything resembling a really good record.
Darren Bravo would rather player 20/20 and he's their only really good batsman.
-
There are a few guys who have potential that were in the Under 19's team that won.
-
@mn5 Yeah. I'll get interested in the Windies tomorrow when it starts (and will distract me from doing accounts). A bit like now really. If there is a spike in my Fern posting it is usually because I am avoiding accounts.
Windies did get to 451 / 9 against NZA due to this: Hope (110) and Ambris (153) came together at 135 for five with their side at risk of crumbling.
We might see a bit of Lockie in the test too: Ferguson's victims were top seven batsmen as he secured five wickets for 67 runs from 18 overs.
-
Will be a choice between the specialist 12th man who never actually plays any cricket anymore, who I used to rate very highly, but always looks awfully out of form and rhythm now in his rare appearances. Or an in form young fast bowler in the middle of a great spell of form.
I know which one I think the Larsen/Hesson will go for.

Stats to show just how good Kane is (I'm having a Cricinfo sort of a day).
From 1 Jan 2015 to the present
Top batting averages of players with 10 games or more in the period
Smith 70.72
Williamson 68.37
Voges 61.87
Kohli 60.95
Pujara 60.83
Khawaja 56.75
Azhar Ali 55.56
Root 54.58
Dhawan 52.42
Taylor 51.21Using the same criteria - percentage of completed innings (completed means dismissed) in which the player has passed 50.
Williamson 57%
Smith 54%
Root 51%
Pujara 49%
Rahul 47%
Khawaja 46%
de Kock 43%
Misbah 42%
Handscomb 40%
Azhar Ali 39%It is outstanding for any batsmen to pass 50 more than 50% of the time.
PS Taylor is at 29%

I love summer.
-
@MN5 our openers are averaging 38 and 44 respectively! World class...
In seriousness Jeet is probably a bit limited as a player but Latham is fashioning a decent record, 6 test tons and is only 25 so plenty of time to develop further.
-
Thought I could 'work' from home tomorrow and watch most of day 1 but can't now as train strike has been cancelled.
That said looking forward to getting to the basin on day 3. Shame there are so few tests this year.
-
@rugger-quizzes Don't train drivers like cricket?
-
She's a typically gorgeous still day in the nation's capital. Perfect for cricket.

Your commitment is admirable. Without jinxing stuff anyone remember the last time we had a downpour in welly?
-
@MN5 speaking of which, what's teh forcast for Wellybops

Has the work IT department blocked Metservice from your Google searches?
Not a cloud in the sky right now down here. Well at least from the 8% of the sky that I can see from my desk.
-
Won the toss and bowling. Always puts a bit of pressure on the openers to take early wickets but given the greenness of the pitch probably a good decision.
Hoping Henry starts well.

As if you need to ask. Beautiful as always. We even have water restrictions in place!!!

yeah, I wondered too. Ockers have it right - win toss, bat.
-
9 tight overs undone within 4 balls by Cdg
-
CDG first change bowler - cripes
Surely this is the sort of series you give someone else a go? - surely there's an up and comer on the first class scene that could be given a crack?
-
Was surprised they didn't run with Ferguson.
-
Because winning the toss and bowling is always a good idea..
-
@donsteppa I wasn't - but, they should have picked him instead of de Grandhomme. We've got someone who can bowl 150 kph, but why choose him when you can have CDGH dribble in at 125 kph?
Pakistanis really did us no favours giving Colin six wickets in his first innings.
-
When you win the toss you always bat. Unless the wickets green, it's overcast and all the conditions are great for bowling. In which case you think about it then bat.
Steve Waugh, I think ...

I though it was one of the Marsh brothers or maybe Border but it was before Steve Waugh.
-
A quick google shows it W G Grace. But I am sceptical
-
@hooroo probably ... I credit Steve Waugh with everything

He would have just made it cooler....
-
Looks like James Blunt in the crowd
-
@majorrage this
CdG is fucking shit, and it's an embarrassment he's bowling first change. And if he's first change, why the fuck do you bowl first??
-
@mariner4life dunno ... but it's 11:10pm and I'm bored shitless and debating chucking it in.
Forgot how boring test cricket is when it's your only focus

He was so good that even when he got bowled out he stayed in because 'people had come to watch him bat'

The way the games going so far perhaps he'd be more entertaining?
I hate James Blunt.
Not as much as Ed Sheeran but.
