Check out the NZ scoreboard v Kenya. I was glimpsing during the day and thought we were on the brink of breaking the World record for 50 over internationals - before the most bizarre hat-trick(?) scuppered it. (End of over 46, start of 47) They got 436 anyway - so close to the senior mark of 443. (Under 19 record is 480 it turns out). The cricinfo scoreboard and commentary makes for some interesting reading... Was anybody there to see what happened re the 3 wickets in 3 balls.
I thoroughly enjoyed the batting of Finn Allen and Jakob Bhula at Bay Oval a few days ago, and they have continued to shine.
-
@arhs Forgot all about this.
Wow - that's got to be about the weirdest "hat-trick" of all time. Especially given the game situation.
-
Our top 3 did ok!

I was looking at the NZ squad a few days ago because not many of those names were familiar to me. The majority of the team is from Wellington. Did they dominate the most recent U19 tournament?
-
Had hoped to call into Bay Oval last night to see some cricket, but unfortunately India made Papua New Guinea bat first...
-
@bovidae Don't know - but maybe there were misprints in what you saw? This one has four from Wellington, but three each from CD and ND, etc. (Usual bias against South Island players in underage sport!)

I see also that, as I suspected, Kaylum Boshier is Lachlan's younger brother.
-
I was using the Cric Info site where they didn’t always give their province, just where they were born.
Lockrose is English-born and Phillips a Saffer (younger brother of Glen).

Fuck that dude given out handling the ball was stitched up!!! I saw it, but changed the channel assuming there was nothing in it. That ball was dead

Disgraceful from the Windies.

Yep most definitely, but the umpires didn’t have to give it out.... bad form from them too!
-
@gunner yep.
Terrible decisions from the adults involved. Far more culpable than the players in this instance. A farcical decision worthy of universal derision -

Wellington did win the U19 tournament this year. Yes, they did dominate. They had a net RR 4 x greater than second placed Auckland.
I can only think of 3 Wellington players in the 15 man squad though; Ravindra, Bhula and Georgeson.
Wellington usually suck at age grade level.

If the fielding team appeals the umpire doesn't really have a choice. Under the letter of the law its out. It's up to the fielding captain to withdraw the appeal at that point. Hopefully they learn from the experience and let it go next time.

Of course they have a choice.
Option one: lets give this out and cause some controversy.
Option two: dead ball, not out.I think everyone in the world would choose the correct option, except the two umpires and their over protective employers.
-
@gunner spot on.
-
I think the umpires were right. Don't know if they asked the keeper/captain if he wanted to withdraw his appeal - but, that was the best option open to them.
37.4. Returning the ball to a fielder
Either batsman is out Obstructing the field if, at any time while the ball is in play and without the consent of a fielder, he uses his bat or any part of his person, including a hand not holding the bat, to return the ball to any fielder.
As far as I can see, there's not a law that allows the umpires to call the ball dead unless you were to stretch 20.1.2 to ridiculous lengths.

Imagine playing that rule in backyard cricket.
-
Backyard cricket is complicated enough as it is with one bounce one hand catch, over the fence 6 and out, hit any shrubs, bushes or small trees on the full it’s out

"you're closer, chuck me the ball!"
"here you go dick"
"haha you're out idiot"
"DAAAAAAAD!!!!!" -
Goid guys into the quarters.
Yay.
Going ok.
Beat the Jaapies today.
-
@booboo
Took my boys to watch it. Gee, Ravindra is a terrific all-rounder. Great talent in the team, but where are the fast bowlers besides Fisher? -
@arhs get ravindra into the black caps as our #6..
-
-
@donsteppa Is it smoko time?
-
@donsteppa I watched England's collapse (there's simply no other word for it) on cricinfo. One opener for England scored 58 from 53 balls. Three ducks and only one other person scored double figures.
Clearly Indian bookmakers are targeting schoolkids now.

Worth watching:
The guy that is 4th on the list of best U19 bowling figures has turned out to be alright.
The player of that Malaysia U19 tournament was Fern favourite Tim Southee IIRC. I reckon he turned out to be pretty good too.
I do have some issues with Pope's hair but that is just my problem.
-
Some of that slip catching for Pope was outstanding. Really good - up high, down low, going away - and sharp. Great stuff.
-
@nzzp The one he took deflected off the keeper was superb.
-
That is one hideous mop of hair.

You'd have to think they are related at least.
-
@crucial At least tell me he's from Queensland.

Nah, from SA. Probably has some inbred genetic deformities.
-
The Afghans are looking like they will post a good score against us today 269/5 with two overs to go.
On a side note, how does Danny Morrison keep getting gigs?
-
309/6. 69 runs in the last 4 overs.
-
@crazy-horse They've absolutely pasted us in the last four or five overs. Some guy call Azmatullah going at a 300 rate - 66 off 23 balls and they end at 309.
-
The NZ attack looked very ordinary. We'll have to do an India and out-score teams. It's up to the top 4 to continue their good form.
-
@bovidae Yeah - our bowlers didn't look like they had much to counter the Afghans. Fisher trying for yorkers and bowling a series of full tosses that disappeared to and over the boundary with regularity.
-
Well, that was an utterly awful call from Ravindra.
-
@smudge And their spinner was all over Bhula.
12/2 and already the fat lady is in the powder room!
-
They are going to lose to a team of 16 yr olds!
