@Gunner said in [Poll] Will you use Spark to watch RWC?:

    No, because I can’t.

Live 15 minutes from Whangarei and we are on shitty bloody rural broadband, which is not fast enough.

F Spark and F the people who gave them the rights to it.

@Gunner - I'm somewhat holding out hope that on the last weekend before RWC, Spark will announce that people (at least those who are outside their broadcast zone) can subscribe to the Sky pop-up channel that they've set up for commercial premises.

I think I read somewhere that there's at least 40,000 households that don't have adequate bandwidth - so that's potentially $3 million they don't have a shot at accessing - along with a heap of "Hooroo's".

Makes sense for Spark to hold the line on "internet or nothing" for as long as possible, but at the last minute it also makes sense for them maximise revenue.

@Chris-B that's worth holding out for I reckon. But there will be multiple levels of pressure if anything goes wrong with coverage, not that I want it to fail as streaming is ultimately a better model imo.

@Paekakboyz Yep - but, if people from the media are reading this - don't go writing an article about it, because a decent Game Theory response from Spark would be to shut down the plan!

A few comments on this thread remind me of 92 and Sky getting the AB v Bok game.

Bad luck for anyone who has an 2017 or 2018 LG TV. They are now only supporting the 2019 models with their app. A broken promise here.

Yeah that's me, 2018 model, the cnuts. But I have a laptop permanent on media duties and a Chrome cast set up, anyway. I Only really wanted it for ease of remote control usage!

@Machpants that's really crap. 2017 and 2018 models are bloody far from obsolete. Not like people upgrade their TVs every year.

The problem is likely at the tv hardware end. For some reason tv manufacturers don’t use anything like consistent or comparable boards for their “smart” aspects. They dick around with hardwired changes between models trying to create something unique from scratch that is meant to be a selling point of difference but ends up being a pain for consumers because unless app providers were involved at early development they have problems retrospectively fitting in.
On the other hand Spark have always (from lightbox implementation days on) had an obsession with chromecast. When the Apple TV app broke after the generation 4s used a different codec they took nearly a year to fix and just told Apple TV users to get a chromecast to fix the problem.

Got a chromecast device yesterday, FML.
It can't pair to the wifi. Somehow believes the router and the dongle are on different wifi networks.

I Have a Vodafone hub router/modem (with Vodafone TV already), it has both a 2.4 and a 5ghz wifi network, with slightly different names, suspect that is the problem.

But I'm going to return the chromecast today. Too hard.

Will just use an hdmi cable to laptop for Spark Sport for duration of tournament.

Not helpful but I found the chromecast easy to set up using the supplied instructions. I just hooked it into the wifi and cast off my phone

Yeah same was very much plug and play. An easy and cheap solution.

@Rapido - I'm wondering if there is an easy fix for you rather than having to return. It does sound similar to my setup

Sounds like a network issue. Try again mate, I'm sure it will work

@Rapido Yeah I recently got one too. Not as hard as it seems. Make sure you have your phone on the same WiFi signal as when you have 2.5 and 5 ghz your phone can interchange without you knowing and that could be an issue.

Yeah we have a fairly old TV in my boys room that we got one for, basically turns it into a smart TV.

@Rapido it’s worth giving Vodafone a bell, chances are they’ll have seen the issue before and will have instructions on how to get it working.

To me, a TV is just a display. I have an older high quality Panasonic plasma which is a non-smart TV. I wouldn't be confident to rely on TV manufacturers to continually update their apps so it's more sensible to use an external device whether that be an Apple TV (in my situation) or chromecast.

Very true. My TV's apps look really clunky, you can never keep up with pace of tech, easier to update phone
