Was in the same school side as David Young (Wales and British & Irish Lions) and David Evans (Wales).
Was in the same British Polytechnic side as Tim Rodber (England and British & Irish Lions) and Rupert Moon (Wales).
Got the run around from a then 16 year old winger called Austin Healey at the Caldy 7s outside Liverpool. Thankfully I was playing prop that day, so was to be expected.
Very lucky to make turns with ski legends Glen Plake, Bill Johnson and Steve Mahre.

No famous person would know me from a bar of soap, except maybe Todd Miller because he does junior rugby at HBHS.
My worst brush though was coaching my first team, which I did because they had no-one else. It was an also-ran Under 55 outfit with zero talent. They enjoyed playing though and we got on fine.
Anyway turned around one day and there was an All Black watching from the sidelines. Turns out he was uncle to one of the boys.
I was already feeling bad because I wasn't really too flash as a coach, and that just made me feel more insecure.

n.Honourable mention to Semo Sititi, Apollo Perelini, Roy Kinikinilau. Missed out on marking Lomu due to injury đ actually probably a good thing with me being about 70 odd kg dripping wet at the time.

Went to the same school as Nick Stiles. He was a prize piston wristed gibbon back then as well. Repeated final grade which probably doesn't indicate he was much of an academic.
A mate of mine lived beside League legend Glen Lazarus. We were hired to be bartenders at his 30th. All the greats were there (except for Wally and Alfie for some reason) and it was an eye opener watching these guys get utterly hammered and sing karaoke. Farker never paid us for services rendered though. I would have served (and serviced) All Blacks for free but not farking leagies. Was hard work too. Those pricks drank like fish.

I was playing Division 2 Rugby for Te Rapa against Suburbs about five years ago. I lifted my game when I saw Dave Rennie watching from the sideline. I heard that Wayne Smiths son was in the Suburbs side and the chiefs coaches had trained them a few times.

@mooshld Did not. Just not worth mentioning... The time Nathan Mauger scored a try outpacing Umaga and Cullen down the sideline at Athletic Park for the Crusaders was fucking hilarious, for the guy who went round with a 2 dollar note trying to find someone to swap for two of the new 1 dollar coins.
Didn't lose to the Syrups though.

Played sport with: I defeated Bruce Campbell and Michael Hurst at pool during a Hercules cast party. When intoxicated, I am a pool shark. When sober, I couldn't hit the side of a barn. In terms of celebs, heaps. Working as a journo, they're a dime a dozen. Also via Telethons.
Had breakfast with: I'll save that for my memoirs. -
Played against a few future All Blacks in first XV rugby. But one highlight was being in the first XV against the teachersâ invitation side and playing opposite Tiny Hill ( he would have been in his mid 40s) in the line out. At half time we got coaching from our opposite numbers. He said to me :â the most important thing about locking son is binding tightâ and proceeded to demonstrate what he meant. I was left dangling in mid air. He felt like he was made from concrete.

I played in a charity rugby game alongside Mel Meninga when in Canberra. Thought I had done really well setting him up with a great pass to place him in a gap. He just glared at me and passed the ball back so I got hammered. When I got up and dusted of I gave him a baffled look and he said 'I'm not here to run'.
As for ABs, Cory Jane would come down to the school and help out alongside the RDOs when I was coaching. It was more an interaction than a meeting as he was always cornered by the kids. -

My memory is fading and it's not quite as important to me as it was 10 years ago. But it remains a point of pride that I got fucked over on a rugby field by these guys ...

McDowell and Dowd were in the same front row v Suburbs, 1 and 3 respectively. One was XAB the other FAB. McDowell gets the 1 jersey as he gets a Bill on the sleeve. Dowd (who I thought was a better player overall) relegated to bench as he "only" got second.

Half back. Baby faced little fucker. Played for Uni and Waikato. Good cricketer too. Had a brother who was quite good at cricket. Hated him as he looked about 12 but could never catch the little twerp. Indicative that he was actually significantly better than me. Played same time as Duggan. Picked him as I recall he actually made it off the bench for a couple of minutes whereas Duggan made it to the bench but didn't get on. Thought Duggan was better.

Played against Scott Styris when he was playing first 5/8 for Ham OBs.
Played for Katiaia 1st XI v Dion Nash wjen I was 7th Form he was 4th for Dargaville.
I recall Warren Johnson being the fastest bowler I ever faced. Played him for Mangonui Colts (U21s) v Northern Wairoa at Dargaville. He also scored 198 out of 299 in 60 overs. I scored 6. Was third top scorer ... we lost ... by a little ... we had 9 players ...

When I was a kid, I used to play rugby in the garden with Denis Charvet. He was just 12 years old and already awsome.
It's sort of annoying isn't it? That you can see that someone is so gifted at such a young age? My local club runs mini-rugby and all the age grades. Some years ago taking the under 12s to some Godforsaken Devon town my mate came back saying that we were so much better than them but they had this one kid that ran rings around everyone. Turns out his name was Henry Slade.

Oh yeah ... whoever mentioned John Spiers (I knew I had another AB prop ... ). Played against him in a pre-season game for Reserve Grade for Eden v Pukekohe.
He was this old big massive bloke playing lock. Far too fucking big to be a prop really. I mean like fucking massive.
The Puke blokes said afterward awesome guy but that if if really wanted he'd snap you in two. I believed them. Reckon he probably still could 30 years on.

One I forgot, probably as I didn't actually play against him or with him though we played in the same match. It was a local "friendly" derby over the Christmas period. I was playing 6 and it was a tight game. I was replaced later by this ringer we had in place. Some Samoan guy named Sam Kaleta. As it happens we won quite comfortably in the end.
I had obviously softened up the opposition for him.

Here goes. Two seasons playing with Mark Shaw in London.
Played against Nigel Wray (fullback at Old Milhillians); played cricket with him. Same team as George Milford Haven, the Queen's cousin. Got tackled by JPR Williams in a charity match. Took out, in a serious way, Stu Wilson and Bernie Fraser (Stringfellows and Tramp) the Thursday before the England test. Buy me a beer, and I'll tell you how that ended.
My brother-in-law played for Canterbury against the '71 Lions. Took Bob Burgess for dinner the next UK tour.
