Ma'a Nonu leaves Toulon, puts career on hold

Ma'a Nonu leaves Toulon, puts career on hold

Former All Blacks centre Ma'a Nonu has announced he is to leave Toulon and has put his rugby union career on hold due to family reasons.

Must be serious. Hope it gets sorted.

Family probably homesick. Some embrace living overseas, others don’t. No big scandal.
Mate of mine saw the Nonus in Venice a few weeks ago playing happy families

If they're heading home I wonder who might sign him - assuming he wanted to be signed? Canes would be the logical ones, but they've got an abundance of backs.

Does this make him an outside chance for WC? Or not a show at all.

@hooroo Be pretty doubtful - he's just turned 36 - another year he'll be 37 and it's not like we are weak in the midfield.

On the other hand, I don't watch Euro club footy - maybe he's the same player he was when he left...but, I doubt that. 🙂

still makes him better and more durable than Ryan Crotty

Just gonna drop in and say he was immense for us in knockout games at the last two world cups. An amazing player in Black (who screwed over teams at SUper level)

He only really had two 'screwed over teams at SUper level' - one year for the Blues (I think most Blues fans felt he was good in one of his two Blues stints) and the Highlanders. He put in great service for the Canes for 10 years, he was even playing great the year that the Hammettuer went to war with him.

Jeez mate! I had to log onto stuff.co.nz to find out what the outcry was from down south! Thought there had been another earthquake!

@nepia There's also the factor of leaving the Blues high and dry - agreeing to return for a second season at the Blues and then bailing at the last minute.

    @nepia

But those two different things -

In 2012 he played for the Blues the first time around and was poor (one of his two stints).

Then in 2014 he played well but at the end of 2014 agreed to stay with the Blues before bailing at the last minute.

Pffft, who can remember the specific goings on at the Blues?

He should never have been playing for the Blues or the Landers. He was the GOAT so long as the colour on his jersey was black, yellow or both. We miss him the same way we miss McCaw despite Cane being the fucking man.

    I don't disagree!

He went from one of my hatiest players to one of my favourites. Never been a better centre pairing

@hooroo yeah. Observing him was/is a great reminder that players can improve out of sight and that girth increasing middle aged men watching rugby on a couch probably know fuck all 😀
