@duluth wondered what was up with Lousi, but read that he is having a minor op. Great to see Proctor (Matt) back on the field too. Dang we missed that guy for the canes.

Highlights of the 2017 match

Canterbury will be hell-bent on making amends for their sluggish start against Tasman last week and will also be looking for some revenge from last years walloping at the Cake Tin.
I see this as a 50-50 game, could go either way. As per usual with Canterbury vs Wellington fixtures, Canterbury look to have a stronger forward back and Wellington look to have a typically potent backline.
I just hope for our sake that Aumua returns to the starting side as O'Reilly doesn't look upto it.
Reuben Thorne will have his skates on. He is coaching Christs College in the UC Championship final which will finish at 2pm before getting on his bike for a 2.05pm kickoff at AMI. If College manages an upset against Boys High Reuben will have to miss the celebrations.

Bloody stupid they couldn't reschedule the schools final till Sunday to avoid this clash. I know a bunch of people that aren't going to watch Canterbury because they are going to the schools game.
I think Wellington will win, very disappointed with the squad Maddock has chosen and we looked directionless last weekend.
-
@sammyc Why didnt they just play it as a curtain raiser?
-
@sammyc Yeah similar to here last week with Wellington vs Otago on at the same time as the schools final between Town and Stream. Strange that the communication lines between school and provincial organizers are so closed off.

They used to play the game at rugby park, but that changed a few years ago so that the team who qualified first got home advantage.
I guess it's so they school pupils can all go without having to pay for a ticket

shouldnt that be a double header?
-

There's ways around that. Auckland had the schools game as the curtain raiser last week, it was free entry as long as you arrived before half time
The stadium won't be full for an NPC match and the ground makes money on the food etc
Maybe the field can't handle two games in a row?

When's the Canterbury team released?

Changes you'd make to the squad??

Still not on the CRFU site and I haven't had my team update email either. Don't know why they're farting around.
I think the forward pack last week was the best we could put out. If there's some prop rotation this week that's no biggie as we have depth there.
I wonder if Mo'unga has been released? Would make some sense all round. He'd be a big 'in' and aside from that I'd shake up the midfield and back three and bring Bridge back in, move Ennor into midfield and the backline would look a lot stronger like this:
9 Drummond
10 Cameron / Mo'unga
12 Burleigh / Beard
13 Ennor
11 Punivai
14 McKay
15 Bridge -

Until DMac or Beaudie go down in the warm up to the Bledisloe.....
Makes more sense to release Mo'unga to play next weekend when there isn't a test.

Hence I've bracketed him

@sammyc It was weird how excited people were for a mediocre plodder like Phil Burleigh. Surprised he could make that squad.
-
George Bridge, Josh McKay, Braydon Ennor, Sam Beard, Caleb Makene, Brett Cameron, Mitchell Drummond (cc), Whetu Douglas (cc), Tom Christie, Reed Prinsep, Mitchell Dunshea, Luke Romano, Sef Fa'agase, Nathan Vella, Alex Hodgman
Reserves: Greg Pleasants-Tate, Daniel Lienert-Brown, Chris King, Hamish Dalzell, Tom Sanders, Connor Collins, James Hawkey, Ngane Punivai

I wasn't excited as such but given the cattle lost from the midfield over the last couple of years (ie our last two championship combinations in Goodhue & Barrett, Bateman & Thompson) it was pleasing to have a decent veteran available, and I'd been lead to believe his club from was good. Additionally Inga Finau seems to have dropped off the radar.
Not sure how bad Burleighs' injury is but you might be in luck.

Burleigh was a terrible signing at the expense of Ray Nu'u who moved down to Southland and is a very special player.
Chris King another I wouldn't have signed. Plenty of young talent in that position.
I've dont rate Brett Cameron, he stands far too deep. And Makene is an average at best winger.
I also think Punavai should be at 13 instead of Sam Beard

Burleigh is a journeyman, if we are going to talk club form then he doesn't come close to Nu'u

I guess they wanted some old heads in the squad, but yeah - probably better off developing some younger players than dragging some old guys in for one last hurrah.
On Mo'unga - he's a huge loss to Canterbury this year - alongside Whitelock, Bird, Thompson and Bateman.
Rugby NZ needs to look at "eligibility" of ABs to participate in play-off matches. I reckon they need to have played a few round robin games to be eligible - otherwise Steve Hansen potentially gets too much say in who wins the competition.
Mo'unga is one who could be released and almost win the competition single handed.

Trent Renata, Ben Lam, Matt Proctor (c), Thomas Umaga-Jensen, Wes Goosen, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Sheridan Rangihuna, Thomas Waldrom, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Vaea Fifita, Isaia Walker-Leawere, James Blackwell, Jeff To'omaga-Allen, James O'Reilly, Tolu Fahamokioa.
Reserves: Asafo Aumua, Kaliopasi Uluiakepa, Joel Hintz, Will Mangos, Mateaki Kafatolu, Kemara Hauiti-Parapara, Billy Proctor, Malo Tuitama
Joel Hintz must be one of the smallest NPC props ever so thankfully JTA is available. Hopefully Wellington have another slightly bigger TH with Fidow out for the year it seems.
Isaia Walker-Leawere was quiet last week. But Du'Plessis Kirifi had a good game. Unsure if he is big enough for super rugby but he looks promising at this level. O'Reilly may develop into a good hooker but his lineout throwing needs work

Burleigh is from Chch and was playing club footy so was he a 'signing' they were compelled to pick or purely selected ahead of Nu'u? Same as Cam McIntyre last year.
King is one of six props. He says himself he'd happily flag it. Yet he acquitted himself well in Super Rugby. The other five are relatively young.
I think you have two examples there of veterans picked a) on merit and b) for their experience.
I think you're a little harsh on Cameron but I wouldn't mind seeing McKay tried at 10.
Makene is a guy who maybe just needs to settle in one position but can't at any level. I suspect his best position is 12 but we shall see.
-
A gentle reminder that this game has a 2:05pm kick off -
-
@sammyc ray nu’u is still young and raw. Coming back from a serious broken leg too. Burleigh is there for a year to fill a gap. Rameka Poihipi would’ve been the 12 but obviously injury curtailed that. Next year guys like nu’u , Dallas McLeod , punivai etc will have developed more. Sam beard is the plodder. Burleigh is class , just on ageing legs. Name a better 10 in Canterbury at the moment. I like Fergus Burke but he’s only 18/19. There’s some great kids coming through at the moment.
-
@winger the good thing about Hintz is he is a champion power lifter so can probably hold his own at scrum time even though he is pint size. I would rather that than have a big lump that gets blown off the ball.
I like our chances today, especially with Matt Proctor back in the side. We have the luxury of rotating backs all the way through the comp with the depth we have developed over the last couple of seasons. Our problem will be if we start getting injuries in our tight five, there aren't too many good props / locks running around club rugby atm, most of our depth in that area have gone to other provinces.
-
Ive changed my mind in Bridge ever being an AB. At least until he loses the fucking alice band
-
I don't get to watch much of it, but i do enjoy the loose fluid nature of NPC rugby
-
@mariner4life me too, just great exciting stuff. Rush defence not done that well by both teams, but fun to watch
-
Although that was just awful by Wellington
-
I remember when Renata was coming through the school grades with big hype the same time as Beale.
Both are playing today but have had very different careers. Renata doesn't even look up to this level.
-

Wellington look second best in nearly every facet so far
-
that was a nice try.
Scoreline definitely reflects the output of the two side in that half
-
Just another year of having shit forwards!! Aumua should be starting this game.
I'm very suprised how poor we've been on defence with Proctor and Goosen out there.
There are a few players that aren't upto this level that are really costing us. James O'Reilly with his botched throwing, Rungihuna at halfback has been piss poor and our two props are useless - how is Toomaga Allen an All Black, a complete joke to be fair.
-
The headband is still shit
-
Geez, that was an awesome break from Bridge. So fast. Try Makene.
They're stuffing up my tipping. C'mon Wellington, that margin should be smaller.
-
Shit drop out from Harold Bishop aka Garden Bachop.
-
Bridge getting a wee bit of revenge on Aumua after he burned him on the outside last year
-
@kiwimurph Can't believe the Canes still have him for another year on their roster. They really stuffed up by not signing Falcon.
-
This game is heating up nicely.
A change of halfback has changed Wellington
