NPC Final - Auckland vs Canterbury (free entry)

Lets hope the supporters show up
-
Auckland have two injury worries out of the final, with fullback Jordan Trainor taking a head knock and Manu rolling his ankle.

Crap. Two of our better players. Particularly Manu

Plenty I'm talking to are going to go. Hope for good weather

Clarke would be the most likely to start at centre? Umaga would come in for Trainor
If either player can't start our defence is seriously weakened

Making the game free is a good choice because the ground was basically empty for the semi final. If Aucklanders won’t turn up to a free game then they’ll never turn up. Don’t know why they persist with Eden Park for the NPC, atmosphere must be close to zero with such spartan crowds. It’s where the NH puts the SH to shame.
Good game from Akira, what more does he need to do?
-
The atmosphere at the last couple of games has been good
I expect the free crowd to still be less than a below average SR crowd. Blame the diminishing quality of the NPC for that
-
What’s a good crowd result? 1/4 full?
I think that is a fantastic move by them.
What’s the bet the Waikato game is about 15%full?

That's about what I guess will turn up ~10k. Thats less than most SR games at Eden Park
We'll see.. Maybe I get pleasantly surprised
-
nothing like these crowds then - best Canterbury-Auckland match ever
-

Ask Steve to increase the squad size to one hundred and twenty.

About 6,000 there. They are all in one stand, so if the camera is on another stand it looks completely empty.
6k is not bad for the NPC. Many times more people than showed up for Waikato Northland
-
@nzzp yet the reverse fixture in Whangarei was very well attended, but then with the poor attendance for the Shield match last week, it was no surprise they didnt get many yesterday.

Why don't the use a smaller stadium though? 6000 in a 15'000 looks way better than 6'000 in a 60'000.

No other stadia in Auckland that I can think of. There are some that could handle a few thousand, but none that will get you 6-10k
-
@nzzp time for another Stadium, one for Auckland, one for the Blues and one for the ABs!!

Because who gives a fuck what it looks like in TV? Eden Park is great stadium to watch rugby at, and I went to the harbour game and it had a good atmosphere.

Good for you.
It looked bloody awful on the highlights being empty everywhere. Hardly made me want to watch a heap of games. Less viewing audience = less marketable = less money = more players overseas = kirwan finally gives a fuck
-
@higgins Yeah or maybe even somewhere like Gribblehirst Park wouldn't be a bad bet.

Simple solution for people that like watching crowds instead of the actual rugby, they put the cameras on the other stand and show the thousands of people in the only stand they open.

Gribblehirst is my favouritist rugby ground ever.
But there's no (or hardly any) (at least there weren't) any bleachers/stands.
Could get a little muddy when in rained too ... just a little ...
-
Final will be an odd experience I think, given every neutral fan is going to be cheering for Auckland. When's that happened before?

Since we have been shti for ages, and Canterbury has been dominant.
You Number 1, everyone hates you. This is one of life's rules
-
@billy-tell NPC rugby has been like this for years now, NZR don't seem hugely bothered by it, sure I think they'd prefer bigger crowds but they aren't doing anything to try and increase attendance, for them it's about the eye balls at home, not bums on seats, yes they'd be nice but not the killer blow.
Although the bigger grounds like EP will make the problem look worse, but simply moving to another isn't that easy, player and media facility capabilities are a requirement too.
Anywhere have the attendance figures for this year so far?

@Billy-Tell also the corporate boxes pay for the game whether they are used or not. So there is a pile of cash coming in for going to EP, even though it's a bit empty.
That said, I'm with @Kirwan -- the atmosphere at the North Harbour (and Welly games, for that matter) wasn't dead, had some good noise at times.
-
@nzzp Or to put it in a nicer way, people love to support the under dog

Auckland at home and with a rampaging Akira. Auckland’s to lose

Is there a prize for underdog claiming status?
Edit: the winner of 10 of the last 11 competitions is claiming underdog ... outstanding work
-
@act-crusader Akira? The 38th best loose forward in the country?
-
No, try 37th as I have unofficially retired as from last week.
-
@nevorian If we were lucky it was one televised game a week ... I can handle not having crowds those size to being able to watch every game played.

But it’s the perfect storm - Auckland, Eden Park, Akira, Graham Henry
And if there is a virtual chocolate fish on offer I’ll take it 😎
-
@act-crusader stick to naming your AB 23 each week.

That's the thing - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to boost attendance. Put 5 games on Saturday 3pm and then have marketable games at 7.30pm Friday/Saturday. The reason they don't do it is it is all about TV audience. ITM Cup is great for Sky because they can put something on Wednesdays and Thursday nights when there is never anything on.
We just have to live with it, I guess.
-
@duluth Would be a big blow. Our backline is probably where we have a slight advantage over Canterbury and that'll be taken away with those two guys out.
Manu did have ice wrapped around his ankle at the end of the game and was hobbling a bit, but he was still walking around. If it was serious, I'd imagine he'd be off his feet as much as possible, so I'm a little optimistic he'll be available.
-
Olmstead seemed to be hobbling at the end of the game as well.
-
Referee is Glen Jackson.
