No problem with the weather today for the first ODI in Napier.

Not a cloud in the sky and no wind at all currently.

@Hooroo and I think the innings break will be timed for the sun strike lol. They were talking about it on RS Breaky with Coney this morning.

A lot riding on this series, hoping we see Kane and Guppy put the foot down - as both have been a bit sub-par for their level of talent/consistency.

Still a number of questions to be answered too!

    • All rounders outside of CdG and Neesham - who makes it?
    • Spin (with all rounder overlap) Ish or Astle?
    • Does Southee pull a Kyle Mills and make the squad, only to not play a match at the WC?
    • Munro? yeah, nah? Seifert? ... or Nicholls?
    • Will Taylor snare another century? or run himself and half the team out?
    • Will the bangers go Bang!!?

    Juicy stuff!

How much will we learn about the guys on the bubble playing these guys? I expect the coach has more or less made up his mind already and Munro is in regardless. He's been a fixture for the last couple of years and it's probably too late to turn back now

Did Siefert make the squad for this series?

The squad for ease of reference:

    Kane Williamson (c) (Games 1 & 2)

    Martin Guptill
    Matt Henry
    Tom Latham
    Colin Munro (Game 3)
    Jimmy Neesham
    Henry Nicholls
    Ross Taylor
    Mitchell Santner
    Tim Southee

@canefan I don't think he was ever a real contender. He's done pretty well in T20s this year, but Munro does well in T20s as well so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Edit - given it's 15 to the CWC, he actually probably is in with a good shot. I'd like to see more of him in ODIs first though.

When do they actually finalise the CWC squad? Is it after this series?

Williamson, Astle, Boult, de Grandhomme, Ferguson, Guptill, Henry, Latham, Neesham, Nicholls, Taylor, Santner, Seifret, Sodhi & Southee is my CWC squad. If there is to be a bolter it will be Corey Anderson if he proves he is fit enough.

Did they move the pitch? Or put up a tarp? Or are we going to need a sunlight break again at village park?

Anything less than a 3-0 victory will be a massive disappointment.

Nah, ah. That comment in the interview with JC was a theoretical along the lines of "wouldn't it be good if they could time the innings break to conincide with the sun strike". But I think the sun strike issue is likely to around 6.30pm when play in the second inings will be underway.

@shark bloody big crowd in Napier.......

Satisfactory start after losing toss. 19/2mwith both openers gone. Some lovely shots by their number 3 as he is looking ominous

Henry and Boult are both real wicket takers at the top of the innings. That has to be our opening combo for the CWC, no respite particularly if the ball is nipping around a bit.

Bloody helk. Did not realise Astle has only bowled 35 overs in total in his ODI career. Why are people picking him the CWC squad. Flavour of the month?

Ferguson to Sabbir Rahman, no run, 154.9kph yorker just outside off. Looks to jam this through the off side but too late

    Holy fuck that's quick.

I had love/hate for Sri Lanka when they were going through their appeal for fucking EVERYTHING stage. Mixed in with Murli owning us... good enough reason to be a bit bitter I reckon!

I know basically nothing about them. Bangles fans are horrific. NEVER admit the other side outplayed them. NEVER give credit. Just excuse after excuse. Went down this rabbit hole in last years IPL when reading about Sunrisers. Lot of bAngles fans due to Shaquib. knobs the lot of them

I've been wondering that too. I started to post something a week or so back but assumed I'd somehow missed something obvious about Astle in domestic cricket. Only advantage I can see Astle bringing over Sodhi might be his batting...?

I do think they need to accept that Henry is good (sometimes very good) for 6 overs at the top of the innings but that's generally it.

Don’t think I’ve seen a bowler who can vary so much, on one hand he can rip through teams on the other he dished up shit. Often in the same over..

We've got a batting line-up that could flounder us a world cup on their day, but I don't think we've got the bowlers - other than Boult.

    Lochie is quick, but inconsistent.

Matt Henry can bowl a decent opening spell, but doesn't have enough variations to be a decent option at the death.

Neesh can't bowl a consistent line - he's straying down leg regularly.

Timmy's stats are very poor since the last CWC.

CdG is cannon fodder unless conditions suit him.

Santner is ok as a spinner, but he's no world beater in terms of taking wickets.

Ish can't bowl six good deliveries in an over - and hence is under pressure from Astle.
