If it could raise for me a gigantic sandstorm and release that angry electric snarl during rush hour on the mean streets of Chatswood NSW, I'm all in!
(but I no longer live near anywhere packed like Chatswood NSW)...I live close to Chatswood and drive there all the time so I know what you mean. Being forced to drive Mowbray Rd pretty much all the time to get in and out of Chatswood is soul destroying.
Can you also get a horn that yells "get the fuck out of the way" in Mandarin and Korean?
Good market for that. So far I just found something cheesy but sinister:

Dealer support/parts in NZ/Oz might be a concern too, even if supported by mother VW, and I wonder what the warranty might be.
Dealers will be shitty - as usual - that they can't make their money back on servicing for many EVs.
Hyundai in Sydney had 1 dealership in Ryde that dealt with the Ioniq (the old version), which was inconvient unless you lived nearby. Fuck going to Ryde. The flipside is EVs have a lot less moving parts so the servicing intervals and potential faults are a bit lower.
Still, I've never seriously looked at grey importing an EV for those reasons i.e. you're on your own, and Joe Mechanic can't help you.
Nissan at least take it half seriously. I would have liked to get a Leaf+ for the wife bar the hailstorm that quashed those ideas. The Ariya might be worth a shout.
Yeah I've heard bad things about VW dealers but hey they are car dealers!
My problem with the leaf is their outdated ideas on battery thermal management but frankly otherwise it should be the ideal car for us, great reliability record, all my Leaf-driving friends love their car, won't worry the wife with high tech palava, and easy for her to park. Plus I've been a passenger in one and it is quiet and comfortable for suburban trips. But that battery...One concern with Nissan, once they merged/shared with French partners, their fabled reliability went a little downhill (and they invented the Tiida) but did I mention the reliability reputation of the Leaf? Yes I did..

After further research, to stress out (South Koreans), make sure your car horn does NOT sound like a duck https://news.sky.com/story/researchers-suggest-replacing-car-honks-with-duck-quacks-10927151

@mariner4life commodity prices suck for that.
Bunch of people waving the solid-state flag which would be interesting.
Solid state not here for 2-3 years or do you have better intel than me?

Well, it's their warranty, so they have to suck it up. Better the cabin air con than no cooling at all.

The researchers found that quacks were less startling and could contribute to road safety by being less distracting to drivers.
Isn't the whole point of a car-horn to get attention (ie: startle) - generally for the purposes of "WTF! Look around you, you fluffybunny, I'm right here!"
Edit: thinking about it - I guess 80% of the times a car-horn is used, it isn't actually used for the correct purpose... and yeah - should be quietened down so the stupid fluffybunnies using it for "I'm in a queue of cars, and don't know why it's not moving, so I'm gonna make some noise!"
Stupid pricks, deserve to sound like ducks. -

not sure if/when the base Enyaq will hit NZ (but advertised online I think?) but I'd guess in Australia this coupe variant would get a second look, not sure rear seat headroom but boot space is still nothing to criticize and it is a darn bit faster than the base car thanks to better drag. Wish Skoda hired a new colour advisor though: https://www.drive.com.au/news/2022-skoda-enyaq-coupe-iv-revealed-with-220kw-rs-flagship-no-closer-to-australia/
When will someone realize there is plenty of demand down here, just little supply (apart from Tesla)
-
might not be the right thread...but i have noticed the Vic has finally embraced electric scooters, gave one a go yesterday, more so it was set up if needed than anything, was fun although not cheap

@kiwiwomble not going to lie, I do like watching them skittle themselves. Dangerous things for lazy, uncoordinated people to be on.
-
@antipodean for sure, was talking to the wife, for me i think its going to be more a case of if/when we go back to work, if my choices are ride the tram with your face in someone armpit on a 40 degree day or "scoot" down the dedicated bike path the whole way, i might give that a go

Interesting test this - things I took out of it was if you are a skier/snowboarder, get a roof box.
If you can't be bothered watching the whole thing (which is long), go to 19:22 and you can see the battery used over 10miles/estimated range for each of the situations tested (fuck having a caravan).

Need caravans with batteries in the base to act as extra charge for the car!

A few companies are already looking at this I believe. Only problem is you're adding more weight!
There was a couple of Yanks tested the Rivian's towing and it basically halved the range - tho it was in Colorado driving a big mountain road with about 3600kg load, so no shock there. Not as much regen on the downhill as expected tho.
Going back to an earlier point I made: people talk about the effect of towing on EV range, yet generally ignore the fact something similar is going to happen to an ICEV. So no big deal, just try to be as efficient as possible regardless.

Interesting in regards to the whole vehicle fleet though.
Take the example of 'workhorse' vehicles for say, farming. Range isn't necessary a problem but could become one if the reduction in range from things like towing is this dramatic.
A trailer full of sheep? Fencing gear? Portable yards. Feeding out
You still need to get a (long) days work done without going back to base for a charge.Yes, an ICEV will also have reduced range but more like 20% than 50%

Valid concern, tho I think in an ICEV it more like 30% drop in efficiency for these heavy or aerodynamically inefficient loads - lot of factors to consider.
Going back to the Rivian test I mentioned:
This is at highway speeds - where EVs aren't quite as efficient as lower speeds with stop-start characteristics - with 3.6t on the back climbing a gradient. A caravan isn't that heavy but suffers more from drag.
The surprising bit for me was the low regen when they headed downhill - only a few km put back in the battery. Cold weather issue? Driving mode not set up right?
The farm scenario you're describing is a little different, so I don't think you're going to see a 50% reduction for most tasks around the paddocks, or even going into town with that load of sheep. The superior torque factor for an EV would offset the high revs needed in an ICEV depending on terrain and usage.
As with anything, it comes down to the individual circumstances. A lot of people moving to an EV make a few simple changes to ensure they're not going to have range issues in the day-to-day - towing 3 tons isn't generally one of them. Driving 800km without a recharge (like a diesel) is a while away yet.
I think a few farmers would like a world in which they don't have to get diesel trucked into the farm, and just use their solar/storage to recharge all their equipment tho
Speaking of farm work - the same channel doing the test above did this with an R1T:

Thanks for the vids. Will watch.
My 20% guess is based on my own experience towing and/or using roofboxes. Loaded up for a trip away with roofbox, bikes and a 500kg camper reduces range by about 20% eg I may go from 10km per litre to 8km
