If Crotty isn't the first-choice 12, I like the idea of slotting him into 10 from time to time.

    Closely related to Istekau Dagg.

Ahh yes. The Dalmation Dagg connection.

Crotty is an excellent player. Interchangeable at 2nd 5 or centre. Can pass off both hands with good proficiency. Courageous in taking on the line. But given he takes an eternity to get a punt off, the number of charge down opportunities available would send NZ rugby fans into meltdown....

Give the gig to Bryn Gatland and make sure that he gets a Test Cap to show his Dad. 😉

    @ACT-Crusader

Not as long as Jordie Barrett. Perhaps they can be coached?

The next cab off the rank has to be playing in New Zealand - they're not going to open that can of worms for a third choice five-eighth.

They already opened it with Todd last year.

We wouldn't be in this situation if they hadn't insisted on making a sow's ear out of a silk purse.

This sums it up for me, we went to the last RWC with 4 test quality 10s and will head to this one with 0.

The question for me is less about who the back up 10s can/will be and instead about who are the specialist 12s that can take the added decision making responsibility at 12.

Completely different situation. Todd had played SR in NZ in 2018 and was already signed for 2019. His contract with that Japanese club was only for about 4 months in 2018.

Parker is playing SR in Japan, Cruden is playing in France (contract until June 2020) and Carter is contracted to a Japanese club for Top League. It's unlikely that Cruden and Carter will ever play professional rugby in NZ again, and it is still the question whether Parker will return to play in NZ in 2020.

Yeah totally different kettle of fish, it was basically a sabbatical, if Parker leaves SW end of this season and signs to a NZ club he could get dispensation eligibility (done before for Luke M - a waste of time that was.

Not sure about your math on that one?

Are you counting 2015 Beaudy, but not the 2019 version?

I reckon 2019 Mo'unga is better than 2015 Slade. Probably better than 2015 Beauden as a first five as well.

Would be interesting to go back and read the thread surrounding the demise of Cruden in 2015. I reckon we'd have some panic around a creaking Carter, fullback Beaudy and rabbit in headlights Slade.

Every situation is a different kettle of fish. Obviously it wouldn't happen now but Carter is a different kettle of fish because he is a 100+ capped AB, a Marty Banks style kettle of fish could be resolved with any Japanese club given their scheduling this year...

The rule is the rule, until they started sabbaticals, Todd was the first one they selected while not under a current NZRU contract in the pro era (to my knowledge).

That's me forgetting Lima didn't go in the squad but played at test level that year in the Republic.

He may have had a contract signed to commence at a future point, but at the time he was signed to Panasonic, they specifically had to grant him a release.

Again these are all shades of gray. A player could be selected under the provision they sign a contract to return to NZ at the conclusion of their current contract like Todd did.

@rotated Who says Todd's contract with NZR expired at the moment his contract with Panasonic started? He was released to take up that contract, possibly because he had a clause in his then current contract with NZR, that allowed him a short-term stint overseas. Doesn't mean his contract with NZR ended. You can have two contracts at the same time, as long as your playing duties don't conflict.

And If Crotty moves to 10, it gives us a chance to slot Charlie Ngatai in at 13....

Pretty sure you've spelt Ardie Saviour wrong. And you have the wrong position.

@Paj reported on Saturday that Hayman was wearing the #8 jersey for the Coastal 3rds . . .

    . . . but playing at lock.

    Blackdragon was THIS close!
