I don't care if he was towed behind a car, to run that distance at that pace is phenomenal.

Jim Ratcliffe has enough money to throw around for these types of races.

This is only tangentially related but I was reading about Tuariki Delamere on RNZ this morning and discovered that he holds an unofficial long jump world record. (Hopefully I've linked this right).

    @Cyclops Interesting!

Google throws up this explanatory story.

    https://magazine.wsu.edu/2016/08/04/staying-a-jump-ahead/

Since Delamere had the longest recorded jump in a sanctioned meet using the mid-air somersault, the ban effectively sealed his status as the technique’s world record holder.

Apparently the fastest recorded 1,000 meter by a NZer this year is 2.44.... Eliud's fastest 1km split was 2.43

    phenomenal

Who runs 1000m and times it?

Seems likely he had the record by default.

Good point, perhaps you should pop out tomorrow and run 1,000 metres and claim the record for yourself.

Precisely. Pick a distance you think you're good at and keep in mind how you're going to continuously maintain that pace.

Yeah. I love the 10k, my favourite distance by a mile. Gives me an opportunity to really pace myself and plenty in the tank for a big finish.

My best time - 52 minutes dead. Not great, but not shit either.

His time. On average. 4 times. 28:33.

I'm not worthy. Not even close.

Yeah I noticed that fact on a re-read. But didn’t amend as thought only a pedantic arsehole would point it out.

Athletics New Zealand Rankings and Records

John Walker has the national record for 1000 metres at 2.17. (If you're a pretty shit hot runner you could nip out and grab that national record for this year - and stick with Eliud over the first km).

The Robertson twins would still be ahead of Eliud after 10kms.

And Zane Robertson might have been a bit behind him getting close to the half-marathon, but would have sprinted past and collapsed over the line (I think Eliud was probably tracking at 59.55 at that point).

But, Zane would be about 3kms behind at the full marathon distance - that's a shit hot time by a NZer - edit 457th best ever! 🙂

It's still fast. But you can see the different quality of the 800m and 1500m times

My point is that the best runners at the distance of 1km paradoxically won't run that distance. They'll either run 800m or 1500m.
