Surely a no-confidence motion can't be far away?
It's miles away. Parliament won't sit for months, but even then Labor aren't that stupid.
The ALP literally have nothing to lose at this point by taking a hardline stance once the crisis is over - they don't appear to be capable of winning an election in their own right, and couldn't even Bradbury their way to the last one.
They seem to be shitscared of the paper-thin margin the Libs hold, despite the internal grenades going off in the blue part of the chamber.
What's your suggestion for the new direction Nick? I too am dismayed by the standard of some MPs in Parliament but I'm not sure what the answer is. More robust preselection processes? We need some way of getting regular people into Parliament rather than ex-staffing machine men/women.
I honestly don't have a concrete answer - just ranting at the people in the bubble, who seem to be held hostage by their paymasters and don't have the imagination to lead, anyway. As @mariner4life says above: the beast feeds itself, so how do we address that? Short of pitchforks and torches...
The people making the legislation are the people deciding how it all works - or the guys behind closed doors in the party faithful. When stumbling, insane fuckwits like Joyce and Taylor get returned with increased margins, maybe we're just getting the government we deserve after all.
@chimoaus uses the word "empathetic" above in describing Ardern. I'd love all our politicians to be screened to see where they sit in an empathetic sense. And the Dunning-Kruger scale.

Germany has ~25,000 confirmed cases and less than one hundred deaths. On the 20th of February we had five times as many confirmed cases as Italy, three days later they had seven times more than us.
Read an article from a reliable source that Germany's infections have been mainly among young people which has kept the death rate down. They are now concerned it has spread into the older population which could push the death rate way higher.
ICU beds coorelation is all over the shop. The Nordic countries have low ICU numbers but also low death rates.
As Chris Whitty said, we just don't have enough data yet.

Italy and Spain have 26% of the cases, but 52% of the deaths
Demographics possibly.

Germans know efficient and accuracy.
Only until things start going slightly wrong - then the fun starts.

Germany testing heaps, lower death rate
The game changer, according to the serious experts like Chris Whitty, is testing if people have had the disease rather than just whether they have it or not. .
Good news is that antibody tests have been developed and are being mass produced.

I was thinking more of teenagers and those in their 20s which spans Gen Y and Z.
Bloody identity politics......

You can argue about the timing and we don't know the eventual outcome, but the UK does seem to have really got its shit together.
E.g. Mrs M's sister is a teacher. It took them less than 36 hrs to contact all the parents and confirm a list of pupils from parents who were essential workers.

@Victor-Meldrew just don't tell that to the cockwombles moaning in the media because the government hasn't given extremely specific guidance based on exactly their specific situation.

As the rather formidable-looking female medical expert at the presser yesterday, putting on her best scary matron face, said "Use your common sense. People know why we are doing this. We can't legislate for every individual"

I read much the same commentary from Lothar Wieler, which points to an ability of ze Germans to isolate their vulnerable.

Just got a whatsapp about this:
Self-report daily.
Help slow the outbreak.
Identify those at risk sooner.App designed in conjunction with King's etc.
Yeah I've seen this too. Funny isn't it though that there has been no real publicity about this. Just on WhatsApp? I don't think I shall be downloading the app just yet.

@Catogrande hah my thoughts exactly....you'd hope it would be a bit more officially picked up ad broadcast if it's legit...
