The bombs were attracted by the blackout curtains.

after the first year...did it just become the "yearly bombings"...or "seasonal bombings"

@broughie Counter argument is as they have fewer years left they are more valuable on a per unit basis.
This sort of discussion demeans humanity and is frankly ridiculous. How do you compare Einstein at 75 with the Bolger killers at 15?
To be fair, both had completed their major works by then.
What about that Stephen Hawking guy - he's gotta go - right?
Where's this unified theory?

Governments and health authorities have been calculating the value of human lives for medical and economic resources for years.
How do they determine an organ recipient between a 70 year old and a 30 year old? This is no time to naively pretend that this moral and social dilemma is as straightforward as "do everything to save every life no matter what"

If I was older I would think I would sacrifice my rights if it meant my children or grand children were able to live normally.
Conversely I'm happy to "sacrifice my rights" and be lockdowned for a period if it gives an older person more time to spend with their children and grandchildren in the future (and those children and grandchildren more time with their grandparents).

@dogmeat Good argument although you could reverse the argument for the same type of characters. Out of the loop on the Bolger killers but I assume they are bad and young. To assume I said to off the elderly is a bit of a reach. It’s a discussion.
-
@Kiwiwomble Well then it gets down to whether you believe that the tact we are taking is worth the unintended consequences. I don’t.

@broughie i think the argument for lockdown in aussie is a lot less tenable than it was when we had 700 cases a day, i think there should be some easing of restrictions and i think the government would be more open too it if people took what i consider to be a minor sacrifice, masks, seriously
Victoria is in a tough position, if you look at a lot of the rest of the world, theyve seemingly just accepted COVID....but the majority of aussie/NZ has tried to wipe it out, should Vic forget about the rest of the country and NZ and align itself with Europe for example?...or try and align with its nearest neighbours, so i think before grilling Dan on his restrictions id be talking to QLD about the targets that have been set before they open the bdys
Dan could lift restrictions but we still wouldn't be allowed into other states, so people wold just complain about that
I've said before, i think in this thread, im not overly concerned about catching COVID...i mean, im trying not too of course...but i would horrified if i had spread it to someone that suffered

@Nepia Well I am of the belief that with precaution they can do that anyway. This virus has been made out to be worse than what is really is. But I assume you disagree.
If we can/could do that with precautions then yes I'd be happy to do that, but, that doesn't work all the time, and then we're in the realms of how many deaths are acceptable and that's somewhere it appears we'll definitely disagree.
I don't think it's being made out to be worse, I think that the measures already taken (not just lockdowns, but other social distancing etc etc) have lessened the impact which makes people think it isn't as bad as what it is/could be.

What annoys me is the implication that some govts want to have these lockdowns. If they could get by without the lockdowns every govt would because look at how much debate and negativity arises from them.
But yeah, for Victoria to adopt an unfettered approach they would basically be saying we're shutting ourselves off from the rest of the country for the entirety of the pandemic.
I 100% agree with your last sentence, when having these discussions with a mate who is anti lockdown, anti masks, anti social distancing, anti a vaccine, believes he should be allowed to go out and catch it somewhere so he can get it over and done with (he doesn't have an answer to the logistics of this), the other people getting infected never enters his thought process. I just don't understand that.
-
my personal belief is, based on nothing but my own feelings is that...
people would be a lot more willing to put up with lock downs and the like if the communications was a fair bit clearer. And the clarity i am talking about is purpose, timeframes and triggers. Why is it necessary. What are we achieving during it. How long for. What results will get us out.
I think the same about border closures.
Governments' messaging is basically "trust us" and "if we don't do this 10,000 people will die" and then a bunch of indeterminate, or very long timeframes. That's not good enough.
-
@mariner4life i thought the triggers and timeframes for Vic were pretty clear...we just didn't hit the triggers so arent going to hit the timeframes
where its falling over is what now...just keep in lockdown?...reevaluate the triggers, we've plateaued for a while so the current restrictions dont seem to be enough...so ease the target or harsher the restrictions? hopefully the former and not the latter
-
@mariner4life i guess you and me both have become very disillusioned with the absence of international flight talk, let alone anything resembling an action plan.

Well a bunch of experts said they were unattainable. It looks like Dan Andrews is finally coming around to recognising this.
