and thats just civilians
I think that Cato's half remembered stat would have been made up of military casualties only. So civilian war dead from Battle of Britain wouldn't have counted.
During battle of Britain the British military casualties would have been light (single pilot aircraft), but losses of expensive machinery and training time huge. The UK lost 1,065 aircraft(including 1,004 fighters (according to wiki). Don't know KIA, as some would have parachuted to safety.
On that assumption - That would also mean merchant marine casualties from Battle of Atlantic, Mediteranean Convoys and the Arctic Convoys wouldn't be included.

@rapido well done on getting the road accident stats. I think the Fern Mythbusters can confidently say this is a bogus stat - probably for every year but certainly for 1940.
yeah, cop that @Catogrande ! the bloody gaul to make an offhanded comment!

Ya know. I reckon it is intriguing enough to wonder if it might be a close run thing. Depending on how the stat was worked out (D Day or just 1944? , British or including Commonwealth?, How/when deaths in Japanese POW camps counted)
1939 and the phoney war would have given road accidents a 7k head start..
Then 1940, with the BEF defeated in Europe, would have been the worse year until 1944.Italian campaign was started very late 1943, so most casualties would have been from 1944 onwards.
Plenty of the British campaigns after Dunkirk 1940 were Naval and Air, meaning losses of machinery were hugely costly. But no huge infantry battles etc.
Greece and Crete: fighting withdrawals. British Empire forces lost 3,700 dead
North Africa:
Italy:
Pacific: British Empire forces incurred some 235,000 casualties in the Pacific Theater, including roughly 82,000 killed (50,000 in combat and 32,000 as POWs). Lots of these Indians in Burma etc?Gah, it's too big a job ....

Traffic accidents probably spiked with the blackouts too, an interesting historic read from the Grauniad at the start of the war: Traffic in the blackout: the peril of crossing the road - archive, 1939

From memory it was very close, both in the 350k total area. And of course I didn’t fact check it. That is not the Fern way.

From SMH.
Actually, it is just based on modelling for January rather than real numbers. But seeing as I have already copy and pasted before reading that paragraph ... I will leave it.
Still some interesting stats like there were more covid deaths in January than the previous 2 years combined.
Omicron pushes up Australia’s overall death rate for first time in pandemic
By Dana Daniel
February 10, 2022 — 5.00am
Deaths from all causes may have increased in January for the first time during the pandemic, spiking by about 10 per cent as the Omicron variant infected millions of Australians.
Modelling by the Actuaries Institute’s COVID-19 working group shows the 1582 COVID-19 fatalities recorded in January – more than the whole of either 2021 or 2020 – drove up the number of overall deaths without any expected offset from fewer influenza deaths.
“Until the Omicron surge in cases, overall mortality in Australia has been lower than previous years, as the increase in deaths from COVID-19 has been more than offset by the reduction in deaths from other respiratory illnesses,” actuary Jennifer Lang, the working group’s convenor, said.
As the nation began to open up over summer, the highly transmissible variant pushed up COVID-19 deaths, but there was no significant drop in flu or pneumonia deaths.
“If COVID-19 deaths are near the peak of this current wave, and we do not have another significant wave, total COVID-19 deaths in 2022 may not result in a material net increase in total mortality given the gains in other areas, most notably respiratory disease,” the modelling said.
“However, if COVID-19 deaths continue at this level for several months, or we have another wave later this year, Australia could be expected to record excess mortality in 2022, the first such year during the pandemic.”
Without a pandemic, Ms Lang said, between 13,500 and 14,000 deaths would be expected in January, meaning the 1582 COVID-19 deaths will have increased mortality in Australia by about 10 per cent that month, factoring in minimal change to flu and pneumonia deaths.
“We expect to see excess mortality of around 10 per cent once the complete death data is available,” she said. The outlook seeks to predict official data yet to be released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
“There is unlikely to have been a corresponding reduction in deaths from lockdowns, social distancing, border closures or other measures as we have observed very little reduction in overall mortality during the summer months of 2020 and 2021 from these measures.”
As places like Australia move potentially to an excess mortality period - Got to also keep in mind, the 15k excess lives from previous 2 years (according to Economist numbers)

Corona in the gt12 house.
Hasn't been a fun couple of days (both me and Mrs gt12 with 39 degree fevers) but apart from that we are now more dreading the next 8 days locked up with our three year old (strangely, tested negative, but that might be because he brought it in and had passed the lower viral load for the RAT to pick it up).

How would you rate it mate? Bad case of the flu?

Bad flu.
For each of us (she Moderna, me Pfizer), it was about 36 - 42 hours of 38 degree plus fever, which brings back ache etc.
Apart from the fever (which fucking sucked), it was nothing worse that our boy brings home every week. Occasional cough, sore throat.
Because Japan have been assholes about making people wait the 6 months for their boosters, I'm only double vaxxed (typically, my booster is scheduled for like 5 days after my isolation ends). I reckon if I'd been boosted, I'd have got off much lighter.

Hopefully that locks in your immunity for a while now. Do they tell you which variant you got?
