Fuck what a week
In 7 days we've gone from "trim all fat, run lean, maybe make a few changes"
To
Let go or stand down basically our entire workforce, mothball equipment, shut the doors, and try to still be here when people start moving again.
That's the most telling post in the whole thread.
In 2 weeks time Australia, where I am, is going to be divided into; those who are coping (same income or savings) and those who feel ( are) fucked.
The look on faces of the two airport rental car managers I spoke to this week were nothing short of extremely distressed. That's after 5 days of 14 day isolation, not border closing.
Yeah its worrying the speed of this...even as a nerd who thought it would be a good idea to spreadsheet the spread. What happens in another 7 days?
Our supermarket is nearly a week without pasta and TP now (though other items are coming in in small numbers). The virus isn't widespread yet but at the current growth rate we'll be well into the thousands of cases in a week or two..not to mention the job loses. That's a whole lot of stress buildup for folk that have never really had a struggle like this.
There's a joke going around among pro-2nd amendment folk in the states. "It sure is nice to have all these anti-gun folk collecting supplies for us"
Australia is a week or 2 behind the infections but we seem to be a week ahead on the panic curve

I lived in Sydney 30 years ago. When Amcor owned Kimberley Clark Oz, they made TP by the mile?

There is enough TP for the planet without the issues. The problems are that everybody is trying to go American style corporate on it. 20% of the planet is stockpiling 80% of the resource of it. Bloody frustrating.
Intersting to see worried about the look on the faces of the rental car companies. Good Fucking Job. Right at the bottom of the list of the people I give a shit about.

And that matters how?

Isn't she meant to be inside?
We checked on this as we have a few over-70's in the family.
Self-isolation for over-70's doesn't mean being stuck inside. Gong for walks is encouraged and essential shopping is fine as long as distances are kept and hands washed.

Thanks VM. She looked as fit as a fox anyway and we didn't have any contact apart from the leaflet which is now binnes, she's added me to her WhatsApp group that is. Might actually speak to my neighbours now 😱

Cornwall hotels and guest houses are starting to cancel reservations as people plan to travel here to escape lock-downs and over-70's
There is serious concern that people, particularly older people (both local and from other places), will become infected and absolutely swamp the hospitals here.
Also been reports of people driving from as far as London and Bristol panic-buying - visiting supermarket after supermarket all the way down to Penzance.

The advice may change.
There's loads of great stuff going on on social media. A virtual reading club has been set up around here for those stuck at home.

Yep. I have some family in this age bracket, one with heart problems, which also has a knock on effect with shortness of breath, so right in the "at risk" category. They are not shopping (getting stuff delivered by son and D-in-L) but are going out for walks and such. Yesterday they went for a stroll around Stourhead Gardens, hardly a soul in sight apparently.
I was in town yesterday (Exeter), slightly surreal with not that many people about and everything very muted. Most cafes empty, with some just offering take away service. Some places not accepting cash. It's not just the businesses that are seeing a downturn either, the homeless are looking even more bereft with takings falling - genuinely not taking the piss here. It looked bloody awful.

Very little change around here so far in the villages. Liskeard & Bodmin much quieter though.
My sister is a retired geriatric nurse and her advice is to exercise a bit more more if they can as they will help them build up their resistance.

Both of them have always been very active and fit but my sister (with the health issues) is finding it really frustrating. It impacts in many ways, for instance she now finds the heat in summer a bit too much, just as her son has bought a place in the Vendee...

@Siam I’m a random bloke on the internet .... nothing I say matters!
I hate rental car companies in the same way others hate lawyers, estate agents etc. I.e ... if you'd said "saw some seriously worried look on some lawyers faces", I really think people would struggle to give a shit about the poor lawyers ...

You're right, I think most people would struggle to find much sympathy with lawyers. One of my clients has just sold his business and the lawyer offered him a choice of hourly rate or fixed fee, allowing that anything "off scope" would be extra. He went for the fixed fee and sure enough there was a fair bit of off scope stuff. Then the lawyer (at the 11th hour) had the gall to say there was a fair bit of "on scope" stuff that they hadn't counted for and added a further £10k odd.
My client's reaction was to muse that lawyers are much the same as pelicans. They can both stick their bill up their arse.

But I found the link below fascinating. It's long and I skimmed over some of it. But it's about the numbers, and what can be gleaned therefrom. The ones that we can rely on anyway.
That's a really good link, full of useful info (including the outstanding graph). Cheers for that

@nzzp Can't sleep?!
you can tell? I'm getting older; alcohol wakes me up in the wee hours now, but is still totally worth it. So now I watch data porn on the internet in the wee hours and talk to random internet strangers.
