@billy-tell yea fun as watching nz in lockdown...what a dumb comment
Not as fun as not getting home for my dads 70th. Or my cousins funeral. FFS as a kiwi citizen I’m cut off from my own country. I’m fully vaccinated but to come home, to my country, I’d have to go on a waiting list, to spend 2 weeks in a hotel. And not sure I can bring the wife, coz she’s not a nz citizen. How long does is this expected to go on for? So yeah I would find it ironic that after shutting nz off to its citizens the virus ends up taking hold anyway.
Do you not read the news mate? They laid out the plan for next year a few days ago.
If people like you had your way, then there'd be plenty of people whose dad's 70th would be dad's funeral instead.what a fucking dick comment. uppercut yourself
Yeah it was a dick comment, I shouldn't have put it that way.
Both things are true though - with no quarantine we would have had widespread community cases and old people would have been dying. And the government did announce (fucking finally) a plan of some sort for opening borders and reducing quarantine next year.the "fear" for us living outside the Country who would love to come back and see everyone is, those plans look a bit shaky when you put them next to government's actual responses
I have the same fear in Australia. The "plan" is one thing, but when/if vaccination levels hit that target, outbreaks are still going to happen, and it looks for all money like the gameplan we are seeing today will be followed all over again.
People are not allowed to die of/with Covid in Australasia. Which sounds way harsher than what i actually mean. This virus isn't going away. You cannot vaccinate yourself to zero covid. And no matter how much they say it, our governments are working towards zero covid again.
we, who would like a different approach, don't actually want old people to die. Even though i personally believe lots will anyway.
The recent announcement was the first sign of a realisation of the need to re-open once everyone has had a chance to vaccinate. Here that is for anyone who hasn't seen it : https://covid19.govt.nz/alert-levels-and-updates/latest-updates/government-sets-out-plan-to-reconnect-new-zealanders-to-the-world/
Took long enough for them to say anything, but I'm sure they know it can't go on forever - and full opportunity to vaccinate is both the logical point to change policy, and their 'out' as it makes it the non-vaccinated individual's responsibility. -

What shits me about the whole vaccine rollout is seeing schemes up north of some providers having to offer the chance to win $500 if you get vaccinated (can't find the link but read about it the other day), or community leaders saying that the South Auckland vaccination event should have included bands and free food to get people along, otherwise they wouldn't bother. All the while, a good chunk of the country are patiently waiting to be allowed to get their jabs.
I havent seen anything like that, I do think they need to be going out and setting up Vaccination drives at Maraes, churches etc.
I had mine done at the Northland Indian Association in one of thier temples on Sunday, there was tea and food available after, and my friend told me I should go and have a tea at least as this is seen as respectful to thier culture.
I can't find the article but definitely read it in either stuff or NZ Herald in the last couple of weeks. It's great to see the community band together how you saw in your experience.
Agree they need to go after the resistant or indifferent populace, but it seems at the moment that getting as much of the country vaccinated is important as well. I'd be pleased to see them open it up to everyone, and then use the energy and costs to chase up the stragglers or those who might be on the fence toward the back end of the campaign.
-
I also hope for NZ that this is contained quickly, fast enough to hopefully give a few people a reminder of the urgency to get vaccinated, but not long enough to cause other problems. You will always get people not following the rules regardless what is in place and also you run the risk of a group who will not be vaccinated going to protest that can become super spreader events.
I just hate to think we might see some of the events that have occured in NSW and VIC happen also in NZ

We're a victim of our own success in many ways. If we had have had massive death tolls and long harsh lockdowns like other countries, you could guarantee that some of those on the fence would be pretty keen to get their jabs when they could.
i have said the same thing a lot. I have read the same thing a lot
And every time i read/say it, i still struggle to believe the stupidity of that statement. And the stupidity of people.
I do quite a lot of work with a few consultants based in Italy. They said people were literally sitting by their phones waiting for the call to come in so they could get a vaccine and then life could start to return to normal after months and months of lockdowns.
Apparently the anti-vax/pro-choice/whatever they call themselves movement over there is incredible small and not vocal or listened to, because everyone has seen what overwhelmed medical systems look like, and is therefore willing to trust the science behind it.
-
@aucklandwarlord speaking from my personal experience, the medical clinic at my work does vaccinations and testing. After a rush the vax numbers have dropped. So either people don't want it or the word is not getting out. Either way it is disappointing to have vax facilities underutilised

Nothing like a horror experience to provide strong motivation to do the right thing

It's not like these places aren't used to using PPE...

@canefan guess it is about if it gets under control in the next few days with the lockdown.
If everyone complies, which for now, most probably will, then we will probably get a spike tomorrow and Friday and hopefully drop from there...

How about the mayor coming out and saying that her credit card statement is better than the covid tracer app, and that she won't start using the app just because of this. Obviously I realise she's independent of central government, but you'd think she might tow the party line...
(Disclaimer: I haven't used the covid tracer app in ages, but will probably start doing so if we get back out of lockdown)

I only vaguely remember her parliamentary days, but she wasn't known for being the sharpest tool in the shed even then...
