@taniwharugby the lie they spread is that a woman is paid 30% less then a man for doing exactly the same job. Which is ridiculously simplistic and to be honest complete bullshit. There are so many variables you could never prove it one way or another.
If corporations knew they could get away with paying females 30% less then I'd say their entire workforce would be female...

I'm in education for international business management, and gender remains un underlying issue, with systemic biases that (e.g., "attraction bias" or "congruity bias" that favors men) that do reduce opportunities for women.
E.g., "male raters had a much stronger pro-male bias than did female raters, indicating that the lack of women leaders could be a self-perpetuating issue" (in other words, males have an 'attraction bias' to those similar to themselves.
From the study discussed in that article: "Our findings revealed that men were preferred for male-dominated jobs (i.e., gender-role congruity bias), whereas no strong preference for either gender was found for female-dominated or integrated jobs".
So, I do agree that NZ is way out ahead of many countries, which is good, but there are still bias that need discussing (e.g., in education where I am) and identifying. In Japan, it's out of control, and systemic (e.g. hiring practices, contract styles)

@No-Quarter bit rich to say we have only anecdote then offer a contrary anecdote mate...
it does exist, if only because there are still a whole lot of sexist old blokes in powerful positions.
other countries being worse doesn't make it right. -
@Rancid-Schnitzel so it was smiling vs non-smiling? or uniform - was it that he had a hat on? come on bro, most people would look at that and go - 3 chicks, 1 guy.
is that the fella responsible for shooting down the MA passenger jet? -

These are interesting times. I think culture and society is seeing a bigger shift than has been seen in decades. It is incredible.
Companies, Celebs and Media have become so used to bending over for the regressive left that they are taking awhile to realise that tactic is now a doomed one. There is now a HUGE number of people in the US and elsewhere that feel emboldened to tell appeasers of the regressive left where to shove their opinions. It is now going to become a fact that it is very expensive for companies to get involved in politics. It used to be that attacking right wing views was an easy decision, the left made so much noise.. it was a no brainer.
That has all changed.
It will only magnify out, first to feel the effect will be corporations (like Pepsi), dont fuck off HALF your domestic market base! Next will come celebs and media as they get confronted more and more in more and more vocal ways, comedians like Colbert and John Oliver will be confronted, mocked and abused in ways they have never experienced but often handed out. There is a safety in numbers that will embolden those on the right and left who are sick of the regressive left to push back. when you know there are 60 million + people who agree that tyhese clebs, media and corporations are grade A piston wristed gibbons.. you are likely to say it. I ahve already noticed a willingness amongst colleagues and friends to agree with Trump that was simply not there 3 weeks ago.
Nature abhors a vacuum.. and someone who wants to make money or gain fame will fill the gaping vacuum, and they will go to war against the current media, Celebs and corporations. It wont be fast.. .. but it will happen over the next 4 years. There will be some epic showdowns. I cannot wait for someone like Oliver to have the shit ripped out of him.god you're a broken record, so i'm going to keep beating the drum too. could you point me to hillary saying regressive things during the campaign? i don't even consider her as 'left' for that matter.
i still reckon she got beaten because she is perceived as corrupt as all fuck, because she is perceived as a rich member of a political elite class that doesn't care about ordinary people. not because she thinks differently to you about who should be allowed in which dunny.for example: does clinton support those fuckwits on uni campuses with their safe spaces, not mentioning jefferson, trigger warnings etc? if she had said stuff like that on the campaign trail, and people had voted against it, then fair enough - but i just didn't see it.
Clinton used every regressive left strategy at her disposal - not herself, but mainly through her surrogates. They screamed racist, sexist, Islamophobic at every opportunity. Obama himself was trying to link Trump to the KKK in their desperate attempt to increase black turnout in North Carolina. She and her Obama allowed this shit to go too far because it supported their political aims. They were fully aware of safe spaces etc but of course did nothing about it for fear of losing votes. Thank God she didn't win.
mate, the KKK is linked to trump in exactly the same way that people on here are linking clinton's defeat to 'regressive left' crazies. i.e. not really. if you're going to hold someone else to a standard then live up to it yourself.
trump is a racist and a sexist, i believe. it is not regressive to attack a presidential candidate for saying that he grabs pussy without asking, or that mexico send rapists. i don't think that is entirely what they should have attacked though, and they should have had a better candidate themselves - not one who was the worst possible given the establishment/political corruption backlash.. -
Lot of echo chamber stuff at the extreme end of each side - you're not going to shift a lot from their trenches there.
What has happened in the last 12 months is the middle pile of voters finally getting sick of the so-called "political class" which is distant from the reality people have every day.
Trump has said what the people want to hear. Now he has to walk the talk. Early signs are interesting, basically handing Pence the reins of the political aspect, while he is making some good noises about talking to the other side.
Again, depending which side of the political spectrum they sit, the media is reporting the removal of some of Team Trump as "disarray" while the other side talk about "removing the lobbyists".
Did I say "echo chamber"?

Umm, I think they pay them less due to bias? I can't remember the source, but I read a great study showing that, basically, men get promoted and rewarded for getting married and having babies, while women get penalized.
So, with respect to the 30% idea, it reflects companies penalizing women for potential 'unavailability'. e.g.:
"Women have more onerous child-rearing responsibilities... [and] they will seem less ‘available’ than men and may be away when successions are being planned. The cumulative effect of missing these smaller opportunities warps the gender-balance of the market as more men drift to the top as a cohort women remain stuck at the bottom"

Also interesting to note that my post was not about any poster, and you instantly... in your first sentence engage in attacking the poster.

I call bullshit on all of those studies, mainly as my trust in the humanities and gender studies dept is zero. The bias in Humanities and gender studies is obvious.

What a load of rubbish. Trump has condemned racism and the KKK, Clinton has not only not condemned the regressive left she has supported them.

@No-Quarter i know nothing whatsoever about black lives matter, so i can't really comment on that. i do believe that sexism still occurs, and i would be surprised if there wasn't a pay gap - i've never seen thorough analysis to prove that it exists, taking into account all variables - but then i haven't looked - and i have never seen any analysis that suggests that it doesn't exist.
Oh cool now you are expecting proof of negatives. Fantastic...

May I make a few predictions?
The Trump is a racist BS will quieten down when and if he is able bring jobs back to poorer communities.
The Trump is a sexist issue will never go away because women (and some men) always need something to whinge about

That will definitely be a part of it, because depressed social conditions and unemployment lead to discord and crime.
The other part is going to be how the law enforcement moves forward in the USA in these poorer communities as well. One might help lift the other up.
