They are equally crap IMHO, I was actually surprised to see she didn't raise the quota when labour were in power after she stepped up and took about 150 of the Tampa boat people which I thought at the time was a decent decision . Personally I think Europe helped create this mess and they can deal with it .

It's not a terrible design, but imo the black should be replaced with a strong green.

Not sure if this has been posted but on quick reading seemed quite reasonable...

http://rowansimpson.com/2015/09/02/dear-john/

I actually am coming around to Red Peak. However aesthetically I think the Black and Blue are too similar, it looks brilliant in that mountain shot because the sunlight distorts it so much. Ideally you pain both top parts black - but then you lose the two halves meaning.

I don't see how they couldn't have gotten something closer if not better to the NZRU fern. Look at the NZC fern it is pretty close. We are a nation of 4 million and that is the best fern submitted?

It looks great in that shot IMO, but not sure it's something I could identify with it I saw it flying in a sports crowd, etc.

It's been my primary dislike of many of the options presented that they're all too busy. Good design is often simple and that example would be unique. I'd go for a greater difference between the blue and black.

I didn't read any article about the triangle before this shortlist was down to 4, and now suddenly it seems to be everywhere.

The best point I've read is about this is proving to be one massive social studies project. And that's a very good point. As it's only reinforced something for me, that I'v always known - sometimes democracy doesn't work.

If that was one of the final 4 options I would vote for it, and then vote to change our flag to it. Tidy design, simple but with a great story behind it. I couldn't think of anything more appropriate.

I too liked the Red Peak design. I think if that and Black Jack were there we could have had a better discussion.

I just think Red Peak and maybe Black Jack being there would have led to a better debate. The two non Lockwood designs just don't seem to have any real support.

Stuff has decided that the red peak is really popular . I hadn't actually seen it till it was posted here, i like the colours and it looks less like a corporate logo than the Lockwood designs . Are there any other flags that are similar ?

The red peak is a great design :good1:

Far and away better than the rubbish that the committee selected

Cabinet should add this as a 5th options. The committee and cabinet have cocked up. But its not too late to at least offer one decent option

Then if the public vote for something else then so be it

Aunty flags is a good way to describe the Lockwood designs

A diagram of the flag.

The black on the left represents the night sky, while the the blue on the right represents the coming day.

Supporter Frizzell, whose work has extensively explored Kiwi iconography, said he found the four flags the panel offered lame, particularly the near identical fern designs.

"'They're so f------ tragic I can't believe it. I'm sure Kyle [Lockwood, designer of two of the fern flags] is a lovely boy but that is such an aunty flag, such a nanny flag." he said.

"We all know the PM loves that awful fern that we see on the side of airplanes. He's obviously walked into the room and said this is what you're going to choose."

Red Peak immediately struck Frizzell.

"It's the New Zealand flag. I'm totally convinced. The more I look at it the more I can't see how you could better it."

"The night, the day, the sky. The evocation of the meeting house barge boards. The Tangata Whenua is in the house, literally, without screaming it."

Dustin has been interested in New Zealand identity as long as he has studied design, and felt something like an obligation to contribute.

Like most of his supporters, he found the four shortlisted flags disappointing.

He was careful not to criticise the panel directly, who he believes have been handed a very hard task, but he had hoped a more forward-looking design might make it through.

"They've looked towards those familiar motifs instead of trying to expressing something is perhaps new or innovative," he said.

"As a pretty grizzled designer, it's not about you, it's about getting the right solution."

The flag is similar but not identical to another design which won Gareth Morgan's competition.
