I saw that photo last night when I was looking for the roundel and the debate around it .The city of auckland tag on the back is pretty cool. I wonder how common that sort of thing was?

I think most aircraft had names in those days. Having a look for old photos for the Beaver, it was painted to represent NZ6001 which was in service for the NZRAF in Antarctica. At some stage between 1956 and 1959 the Silverfern was added as early photos show a plain roundel. They rebadged it NZ6010 in 59 as it was discovered that the tag had also been used elsewhere.

This photo was allegedly taken just before the change and you can clearly see the fern as we would expect. It also looks like it was on a black background (could just be the photo)

The Warbirds Beaver also had the fern added after the original paint job and I suspect that it is correctly orientated on the port side. I will try and find out about it from from brother in law who is a shareholder and regularly flies it.

While the roundel on the RNZAF ensign has not changed since its introduction in 1939, a number of versions of the roundel have been used on RNZAF aircraft. The RAF roundel was used until 1942. Between 1942 and 1945 it was primarily blue/white/blue, occasionally with white side-bands outlined in blue. Having reverted back to the RAF roundel in 1946, it remained unchanged when the RAF enlarged the red disc on its roundel the following year.

In January 1957 the Air Board announced that it had developed a new national emblem – a white fern would be placed on the central red of the RNZAF roundel. Because of remarks that this looked like a white feather, a symbol of cowardice, the colour was changed to silver, but on aircraft fuselage this looked like peeling paint. While some called for the fern to be replaced by a kiwi, others remarked that a flightless bird could hardly be an appropriate emblem for an air force. But support for the kiwi won out – a red kiwi was formally adopted in place of the red spot in September 1970. This roundel is still in use today, but since the 1980s it has appeared on aircraft as a red kiwi on a blue disc, or a black circle around a black kiwi, to assist in camouflage.

I'm over flags , roundels are where its at.

Looks like we had different roundels for different theatres, this badass machine is an RNZAF tempest flown by 486 squadron out of Tangmere in the uk.

Although were RNZAF they had quite a few Polish and Czech flyers in the squadron too and a guy called Jim "Black Jack" McCaw whos grandson is fairly well known in NZ . Their squadron motto was Hiwa hau maka [beware the wild winds] because they flew hurricanes, then typhoons and then tempests. Check out the size of the pilot compared to the size of the plane, 2200 hp and four 20mm cannons in the wings and usually rockets under the wings for targets of opportunity like tanks trains and suchlike. There's a video of McCaw blowing up a train with his rockets , unfortunately it was loaded with ammunition or something and he had to fly through the subsequent unexpectedly massive explosion . If anyone has a link to the video, please post it

In the pacific they had this one for most of the war

Thats Geoff Fiskens p40 warhawk the Wairarapa Wildcat, he was the highest scoring commonwealth air ace in the pacific. He was a farmhand when war broke out so was unable to join up as it was considered an essential job so he mounted a successful campaign to piss his boss off so much he fired him.

He joined the RNZAF and flew Brewster Buffalos in the defence of Singapore ,unfortunately althoug he managed to down a couple Buffaloes were pretty useless against the Japanese aircraft. The Japanese bombers flew a couple of thousand feet feet higher than the buffaloes could for a start . Singapore fell so he got reassigned to the Solomon Islands and they gave him this beast which although not as manoeuvrable as a zero was better armoured and had more powerful guns. He managed to shoot eleven japanese planes down before his accumulated wounds meant he had to be helped in and out of the cockpit by his ground crew and he was sent home to NZ .

Just so long as you refine it a bit

Say replace the mustardy stripes with white and the red with a more classy maroon.

I've read the Wiki page on Vexillology, which makes me an expert. This flag is severely lacking in strippers.

No kiwifruit!

Digression - turns out the yanks took a german meringue pie and developed the pavlova some time in the 19th century.

So don't just ditch our national flag, anthem, crest etc. Time to come up with the quintessential Kiwi dessert
