Incredible series that could have gone any different way, I suspect Paine's "cant wait to get you to the Gabba" will be replayed even more now, which although funny is also shit, because it does detract from the cricket from both teams.

Made doubly funny by the fact Ashwin didn't play anyway.

@bayimports said in Australia v India:

Sure exposure to top players, but to execute at test level is still another thing.

I'm not sure what the first class scenario in India is like, but I think it would be slightly more broad (if more variable in quality) than Sheffield Shield.

When you behave like dicks you can’t complain if no one else likes you - noting that I am sure they don’t worry about that as they are still a great cricket team.

I'll assume you didn't see Paine apologise at a press conference initiated by him.

Being your first post in the entire thread I guess you missed that.

@Virgil seems to have retired from the fern so looks like @kev has taken up the mantle of Aussie bashing.

Where IS he anyway? I thought he'd be de-gloving himself at the fact Warner didn't get a ton.

But he did it. So clearly he acknowledged the pressure of further opinion was unfavourable and his coaching staff told him it wasn't up to scratch.

    That's how feedback works.

@MN5 No Aussie bashing whatsoever. Just mentioned that the great majority of cricket fans will be very pleased with the result as the Australian cricket team are hard to like. It seems that some are overly sensitive. πŸ˜€

Nic hardly needs my support and I am quite surprised I am the one offering some, but Paine's apology after the last test came across as one of the better ones on record.

@NTA Im sure first class has more depth than anywhere, but the Gabba is our Eden Park, throw that into the mix.. for guys to win there without first choice players is amazing.

Paine has done nothing wrong. He's a class act.

I do take exception at the fluffybunny that reported the Indians not wanting to play in Brisbane and surprise surprise, King fuck knuckle Haddon just had to spout off on National television that the Indians were scared to play there because of the ground's record. Pillock

As someone (you?) said earlier: we're way out of the bounds of known statistics here.

The Gabba is usually the first Test of a series so is a good setup for us against visiting teams. This time it wasn't the First Test and we were clearly hurting from the previous loss and draw (that might as well have been a loss).

I believe no cricket had been played there recently so the wicket prep was different as well - no square to rough up the ball and create some reverse swing. Starc being kept on past the dictates of form.

"The Streak" was always going to need a great effort to break it, and India did under the unusual circumstances of a series affected by massive injuries and COVID, so even more power to them.

I kept waiting for Baz McCullum type fields where there is 8 players around the bat or ultra attacking fields after they got Puj and Agarwal out. But that's the remarkable thing about the Indian approach. Poor old Paine was never afforded that luxury as he had to keep some defence because of the batting intent. A bloody tricky situation and again incredible tactics and execution from India.

98 times out of 100, a team adopting the Indian approach gets rolled reasonably comfortably and receives brickbats for not taking it seriously.

This day was one out of the box

I'd argue with 150 to get he still could have gone for a more aggressive field. EDIT: particularly for Lyon who hit a purple patch

@NTA yeah sure, I think so too, especially with Lyon, but I can see why he didn't.

But yeah good point. We just saw Aussie out beaten by a team who basically stared them down and out believed them. That is rare - God knows we've failed abysmally everytime we've tried it, world cup final, last test series

    Edit: snap!πŸ™‚

Great day, great game, great series.

Got to say, this was the last result I expected today. But what a performance from India

Nathan Lyon: 9 wickets at 55.11
Mitchell Starc: 11 wickets at 40.72

For the series that's a huge issue ^

Is there any other sport that can hold such suspense for hours on end?

I was fucken glued to the screen. Forgot about dinner, answered no phone call, lost all track of time - i wouldn't be surprised to see the Mrs has packed up and left!

Is it because there are so many permutations for each ball? So many game changing things could occur at each ball? And then you have about 30 seconds to imagine all those things happening as the bowlergoes back to his mark. And then the process goes on for hours.

The only similar thing is a kick at goal or a putt or something but it's only for a few seconds

Test cricket like this, and our Pakistan game must be the best!

@MN5 said in Australia v India:

Yeah I dunno, they've been quite shite in the past and they've had about the same amount of people to select from.

Really? πŸ™‚ Look at the last decade:

    a4d31cab-7cba-4a33-b9b4-484c4cecee14-image.png

I count 20 series wins out of 30, and 1 drawn. That isn't too shabby, even if they've struggled in swing-friendly New Zealand πŸ˜‰ (in the same period, NZ haven't won in India).

Over the same period, Australia have won 15 series from 33 (or 34) with 4 drawn. The days of Steve Waugh's legendary sides is long gone.

They've obviously got the coaching set up right.......they've always had the batsmen but they actually have some decent fast bowlers for once as well.

And I think that is actually a product of realising their weaknesses away from home. In England against the Duke, and on green seamers in New Zealand, they weren't doing that well. In Australia we provided them roads to bat on but their bowling wasn't consistent enough.

    But it is definitely improving.

It's weird mate but perhaps there isn't so much swing in NZ of late as one would assume. In the Dravid years when we were shit, the cold and green tops made them give up - so much so that they paid us to cut the grass - true story!
Now we have Aussie type drop ins (or, more accurately, you have kiwi made drop insπŸ˜‰) and they're really hard which affects the ball.

But yeah, we have good success, well did last time. I have a theory that they drop their guard against us. The games are played in the most ridiculously friendly manner with nary a sledge and heaps of fielders running up to shake hands with outgoing batsmen. Off field stories are all about the tourists having dinners with expats and it's back slapping and compliments all tour.

So there you go mate, stop being over competitive fluffybunnies and you'll sweep them 2 nil! πŸ˜‰

God this might be gay but I just see a tiny bit of similarity in the slight decline of this aus team and our ABs after such dominance over a long time. Players pretty much the same but now good teams are doing to them what they dined out on for ages.

Declining empires? Probably reaching but something's not the same in both teams

I'm inclined to think for almost opposite reasons - or maybe the same reasons, but comparisons in different spheres .

India has been an underperformer for almost forever - with a massive population, but fuck all resources. Now they've harnessed their financial and institutional resources - used the IPL to develop their players - and they've become super strong in depth. If they carry on like this it will be increasingly difficult to beat these bastards!

ABs have punched above their weight because other countries (i.e. England, maybe France) have failed to properly harness their resources. If and when they ever properly do, we might be in deep schtumm.

Overall, it's a pretty amazing outcome given that the last two tests you would have expected the world-class Australian attack to blast out the Indians in the fourth innings. Got to ask the question as to why that didn't happen - and I don't really think the answer is in the quality of the bowling.
