The Cochrane song was pretty good.

I think he was held back by being a bit old (he was almost 40) and not good looking/ uncool (outside Canada) not because his first song was bad.

TBH, it is when musician's following up their hit with some pure mediocrity pushed by their record company - is when we get rich pickings for contendors for worst songs.

Potentially good thread just becoming lists of novelty songs or good or ok songs people got sick from over exposure.

Of those mentioned. Definitely Smash Mouth's 'All Star'.

As in does actually quite well represent the era of the late 90s in its sub-genre of alt rock and hip hop blend.

The lyrics contain the quite (now cliche) but then probably quite 'now' phrase of "get your game on".
Combined with absolutely timeless cliches of "all that glitters is gold" and"only shooting stars".
Then making "mold" into 3 syllables.

But jesus christ. The lyric are bad.

The tune is just meh, and of it's time.

I find the singers voice offensive too, it’s like he’s gargling staples.

It took me a while to work out why I don't like Muse, and eventually I discovered it was the singers voice, as I quite like the actual music until he starts singing.

I quite like Muse. To me the singer sounds like a not quite as good version of Jeff Buckley ( who was incredible ). Really good musicians too, the Bass player does some cool runs.

@smudge I am certainly not saying it's a favourite of mine. The song wasn't even an album track, which makes it even more bizarre that it topped our music charts.

Yeah, my musician friends love them due to this too, I just can't listen to them.

Although if it's a choice between them and Radiohead, it's Muse every time. (Actually I'll take anything in this thread over Radiohead, unless that Jones song by Counting Crows has been mentioned).

It’s worthy. Knopfler is a guitarist of beautiful touch and taste but by crikey Dire Straits did some diabolical shit.

Someone should do a reality show and dump Counting Crows and Smash Mouth on an island and make them fight to the death.

I’m picking on those two cos they each had more than one shithouse song
